BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 HEATWAVE #2 AVERTED – SO FAR…<\/p>\n

Friday reached 104, Saturday came in at 101 and Sunday topped out at 99, along the 99, which means: Meadows Field airport did NOT meet 3-days-in-a-row of 100 degree heat! Thus, the summer of 2026 has only had 1 Bakersfield “heatwave” so far.<\/p>\n

RAIN DROPS & A QUAKE<\/p>\n

Sunday morning got off to a bit of a jolt as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake shook some residents awake. The epicenter was just about under Frazier Park, which is exactly where the San Andreas Fault runs through. Also, making things even more curious – is that the Garlock Fault, California’s second-longest fault, comes right into this area from the northeast. It appears that our latest “feelable” earthquake popped off either right along, or very close to, the San Andreas and Garlock Fault convergence zone. As of late Sunday night there had been 20 aftershocks recorded after the main event at 3:38 AM.<\/p>\n

As the day went on, a push of monsoonal moisture brought a lot of clouds and even some sprinkles to the area. Most of this “rain” was not enough to measure, but we did get one report of a “trace” near Pumpkin Center this afternoon. Is this the notorious “earthquake weather” of popular lore? Note: the last line was intended as a little bit of comic relief, since earthquakes occur during a very wide variety of weather patterns, and times of day (and night).<\/p>\n

ANOTHER CHANCE OF SHOWERS & THUNDERSTORMS MONDAY<\/p>\n

As of Sunday night we’re watching another batch of intense thunderstorm activity propagating westward across Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. Based on the latest radar, satellite and computer model outputs this should continue west and then northwestward, moving into southern California during the early morning hours. As this renewed surge of moisture interacts with the mountainous terrain of SoCal it seems that isolated to scattered showers, and if enough instability materializes – thunderstorms, could pop off some time during the early AM – mid AM hours. The southeast flow should continue to bring this moisture, and potential activity northwest. By mid-morning to mid-afternoon Kern County would be in line and on the receiving end of whatever develops upstream, in this case over the Inland Empire west toward the coast and north into the Mojave Desert.<\/p>\n

In addition, it should be more humid during the day, which will start to make it feel more like eastern parts of the country around here.<\/p>\n
