Frazier Park sits atop multiple fault lines, including the San Andreas, and residents were reminded of that early Sunday morning when a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck and woke people across the mountain town.<\/p>\n
The quake hit at 3:38 a.m. Sunday on the Pleito Fault line, one of three main fault lines in the region along with the San Andreas and Garlock faults.<\/p>\n
Robert de Groot of the U.S. Geological Survey said the area\u2019s geology is shaped by intense pressure as the region is \u201cactually being squeezed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cImagine it\u2019s just sort of stuck and it\u2019s like a traffic jam. So, what\u2019s happening is the crust has shattered. It\u2019s broken into many pieces. Think of a shattered windshield with all different shards. That\u2019s what\u2019s happening. So there are lots of faults in the region, especially where this crunching is happening,\u201d de Groot said.<\/p>\n
Carey Moulder, owner of Cliff\u2019s Cafe, said the shaking was strong enough to jolt the house.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen there was this huge jolt. That actually shook the entire house. And I was like whoa, what was that?\u201d Moulder said.<\/p>\n
Moulder and Robin Steere, both residents of Frazier Park for more than 30 years, said the presence of multiple faults in the region does not necessarily worry them.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t scare me. Maybe it\u2019ll be oceanfront property,\u201d Steere said.<\/p>\n
Moulder said, \u201cAt the end of the day it\u2019s never been anything that I\u2019ve been concerned about. Like if I\u2019m worried that Frazier is going to be cut in half? No. No.\u201d<\/p>\n
De Groot recommended standard earthquake safety steps: drop and cover, make yourself small or get under a table, and avoid moving around during shaking. If you are in bed, he advised rolling onto your belly and covering your neck with a pillow. He also said people should not get under a doorway.<\/p>\n
