OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich.\u2014 A sheriff’s deputy saved two children from a house fire on Friday. <\/p>\n
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 4:52pm on Friday, July 10, deputies assigned to the Orion Township Substation and firefighters from the Orion Township Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 2900 block of Meadowbrook Court.<\/p>\n
A 911 caller said that two children\u2014 a 10-year-old boy and his 12-year-old brother\u2014 were trapped on the second floor of the home, and were unable to escape. <\/p>\n
The first deputy to arrive, Deputy Musse, immediately observed the two boys at an upstairs window as smoke filled the residence. <\/p>\n
He quickly positioned a residential trash receptacle beneath the window to gain the additional height needed to safely reach the children. <\/p>\n
Climbing and using the improvised platform, the deputy was able to help both boys through the window and safely lower them to the ground before conditions inside the home worsened.<\/p>\n
“This incident could have had a far different outcome,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard. “Deputy Musse immediately recognized that every second mattered. His ability to rapidly assess the situation, improvise with the tools available and act without hesitation allowed these two young boys to escape what could have become a tragic situation. His actions exemplify the courage, professionalism and commitment our deputies demonstrate every day.”<\/p>\n
Firefighters entered the home and rescued the family dog that was trapped inside, and were able to extinguish the fire. <\/p>\n
