Job Scams to Look Out For<\/p>\n

Oakland County, MI \u2013\u00a0When we published our\u00a0employment scam awareness article last year<\/a>, we focused on warning signs such as fake recruiters, work-from-home\u00a0schemes\u00a0and requests for up-front payments.<\/p>\n

Those\u00a0still matter today. However, the tactics have\u00a0evolved. Scammers are increasingly using professional-looking websites, text messages, social media\u00a0platforms\u00a0and even artificial intelligence to make fraudulent job offers appear legitimate. Recent incidents involving Michigan residents show why job seekers should take a fresh look at the risks before beginning their job searches.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Job Scams<\/p>\n

Many employment\u00a0scams\u00a0no longer arrive through suspicious emails filled with spelling mistakes. Instead, they often begin with a professional-looking text message, LinkedIn message\u00a0or email that appears to come from a real company.<\/p>\n

Some scammers\u00a0impersonate legitimate recruiters<\/a>. Others create fake company websites that\u00a0each\u00a0closely resemble the real thing. In some cases, criminals use AI-generated messages or conduct online interviews through chat platforms to\u00a0seem\u00a0convincing.<\/p>\n

One\u00a0common scam<\/a>\u00a0involves a job seeker\u00a0\u201chired\u201d\u00a0almost\u00a0immediately. The new employee is\u00a0told to\u00a0purchase\u00a0equipment for a remote position. The scammer sends a check and instructs the victim to buy supplies from a designated vendor. Days later, the check bounces, but the\u00a0victim\u2019s\u00a0money is gone.<\/p>\n

The Federal Trade Commission has\u00a0warned\u00a0of\u00a0a growing trend known as\u00a0task\u00a0scams\u00a0or\u00a0gamified job scams<\/a>.\u00a0Victims are told they can earn money by completing simple online tasks. At first, small payments\u00a0arrive, creating a\u00a0false sense of trust.\u00a0Eventually, victims are pressured to deposit their own money to unlock larger earnings. Many never recover those funds.<\/p>\n

Red Flags<\/a>\u00a0You\u00a0Should Know\u00a0About<\/p>\n

A legitimate employer\u00a0does\u00a0not pressure you to act\u00a0immediately.<\/p>\n

Be cautious if:<\/p>\n

You receive an unsolicited job offer by text message.<\/p>\n

The pay seems unusually high for the work\u00a0required.<\/p>\n

You are hired without a meaningful interview.<\/p>\n

The employer asks you to pay for training,\u00a0equipment\u00a0or background checks.<\/p>\n

You are asked to deposit a check and send part of the money elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Communication occurs only through text messages or messaging apps.<\/p>\n

The recruiter refuses to speak by phone or video.<\/p>\n

The company website looks new,\u00a0incomplete\u00a0or difficult to verify.<\/p>\n

If something feels rushed or secretive, take a closer look.<\/p>\n

Before responding to a job offer, independently research the company. Visit\u00a0its\u00a0website rather than clicking links provided in messages. Search for the recruiter on the company\u2019s employee directory or LinkedIn page.<\/p>\n

If you receive a\u00a0text\u00a0message\u00a0offering a job you\u00a0have\u00a0not\u00a0applied for, treat it with caution. The FTC\u00a0has\u00a0warned that unexpected job-offer\u00a0text\u00a0messages\u00a0are increasingly\u00a0used to lure victims into\u00a0scams.<\/p>\n

Never provide your Social Security number, banking information, driver\u2019s\u00a0license\u00a0or copies of identity documents until you have verified that the employer is legitimate and you have completed a genuine hiring process.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, remember that legitimate employers pay employees. Employees should not have to pay\u00a0employers.<\/p>\n

The Bottom Line<\/p>\n

Michigan\u2019s summer job market\u00a0remains\u00a0active, but so do\u00a0scammers. Compared to\u00a0those from\u00a0a year ago,\u00a0current\u00a0employment\u00a0scams\u00a0are\u00a0more polished, more personalized\u00a0and harder to detect.<\/p>\n

The good news is that\u00a0warning signs still exist. Slow down, verify before you trust\u00a0and remember that a real job opportunity\u00a0stands\u00a0up to scrutiny. A few extra minutes of research could save you from becoming the next Michigan resident featured in a\u00a0scam\u00a0warning or news report.<\/p>\n
