SAN FRANCISCO (TNND) \u2014 A search has been suspended for three people missing in the San Francisco Bay after a boat carrying about 20 family members <\/a>who had gathered to scatter a loved one’s ashes capsized near Alcatraz Island, leaving one person dead.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Wednesday night that it had ended its search for the missing people near Alcatraz Island “pending further developments.” Crews and partner agencies searched more than 950 square miles over a combined 54 hours, officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuspending a search is one of the hardest parts of our job, and our condolences are with the families of all involved,\u201d U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Jared S. Toczko said in a statement<\/a>. “We appreciate the support and dedication from our partner agencies and local mariners who rushed on scene to rescue 20 individuals in distress.”<\/p>\n

Officials have identified where the boat sank but have not yet determined its exact depth, Toczko previously said.<\/p>\n

Once the vessel is located, officials will deploy either divers or an underwater drone to determine whether it can be salvaged, San Francisco Police Commander Brien Hoo said. If it rests deeper than about 120 feet, divers would have difficulty reaching it, he said.<\/p>\n

Witnesses reported “rough seas” Tuesday, San Francisco Fire Department Chief Dean Crispen said, with rescuers encountering swells of up to 5 feet.<\/p>\n

Crispen said first responders were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a boat fire about 600 yards off Alcatraz Island, prompting a full marine response that included the San Francisco Police Department’s marine unit.<\/p>\n

When crews arrived, they saw steam rising from the vessel, which was initially mistaken for smoke. Officials later determined there had been no fire on board.<\/p>\n

Responders found the three-deck pontoon boat, Volare, carrying about 20 people, most of them family members, Crispen said. First responders performed CPR on one person who had suffered severe injuries. The victim, later identified as 79-year-old Clifford Joseph Boisa, was taken ashore, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

Three other people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said, and a dog aboard the boat also died.<\/p>\n
