Coast Guard Captain Jarod Toczko said officers had covered a 950 square nautical mile area, with no success, during their 29-hour search.\u00a0(Courtesy of James Kim)<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph container\">San Francisco police have taken over the search and recovery effort for three missing passengers who were aboard a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/12091098\/search-continues-for-3-missing-people-after-boat-sinks-near-alcatraz-1-dead\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boat that capsized near Alcatraz<\/a> Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph container\">SFPD Marine Unit divers have been coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard to locate the vessel, which is estimated to be at least 120 feet below sea level on a rocky seabed, according to the agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph container\">SFPD took over the recovery operation after the Coast Guard suspended its search for the missing people, all family and close friends who had embarked on a trip on the San Francisco Bay for a memorial, at sunset Wednesday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/260715-ALCATRAZSEARCHUPDATE-32-BL-KQED.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12091253\"  \/>Commander Brien Hoo speaks during a press conference at Gashouse Cove Marina in San Francisco on July 15, 2026, about the fatal capsizing of a boat near Alcatraz on July 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph container\">Coast Guard Captain Jarod Toczko said officers had covered a 950 square nautical mile area, with no success, during their 29-hour search.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph container\">\u201cSuspending an active search is one of the most difficult things we do as Coast Guard commanders,\u201d Toczko told reporters Wednesday afternoon. \u201cI don\u2019t take that responsibility lightly at all. Our goal is always to bring home families, loved ones, and we understand that families want answers. And that is never lost on us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph container\">He said there\u2019s a \u201chigh possibility\u201d that the remaining passengers could be trapped inside the 49-foot multi-story boat, which took on a wave and quickly lost stability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph container\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done survivor debriefs, and we do know that individuals were in the main deck and potentially below deck,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, that is gonna come out in the investigation stage of this. We\u2019re still focused on the search and rescue, trying our best to see if we can locate the three missing individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph\">According to Ralph Boisa, 77, whose three siblings and daughter were on the boat, multiple of the missing people were in the main cabin at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph\">Ralph said his daughter, Yvonne Thatcher, who was also on the vessel with her family, told him that she was inside with Ralph\u2019s older brother, Clifford, his wife, Jackie, and a third woman when they began to take on water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe managed to get to the door and get out, just before the boat fully went under,\u201d Ralph said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph\">First responders rescued Clifford Boisa, 79, in \u201csevere distress\u201d and initiated CPR, but after transporting him to Gas House Cove in the Marina District, he was pronounced dead. Ralph and Clifford\u2019s sister, Carol, Jackie and a third woman, who has not been identified, are still missing. Sixteen other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/12091126\/total-chaos-bay-area-sailors-recall-rescue-of-boat-passengers-near-alcatraz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passengers were rescued<\/a>, in part thanks to civilian fishing boats and a kiteboarder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph\">SFPD officials say once the vessel is located, the department will work with the Coast Guard and other partners to determine recovery options.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocks-v1-Paragraph-__Paragraph__paragraph wp-block wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, SFPD Commander Brian Hoo said that since the vessel is believed to be at a depth of least 120 feet, they would work with private companies specializing in diving recovery if pulling the boat out is feasible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Three people remained missing Thursday after a boat capsized near Alcatraz Tuesday.
