Bill Essayli in a Thursday letter called for an environmental investigation into reports by families in a wealthy Orange County community that several children living there were diagnosed with a rare cancer.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/usattyessayli\/status\/2077917597614637512?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Essayli\u2019s request <\/a>to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency comes after several parents <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/ladera-ranch-ewing-sarcoma-cancer-cases\/3914838\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told news outlet NBC Los Angeles <\/a>earlier this month that their children had been diagnosed with cancers including synovial sarcoma, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/medical-conditions\/cancer\/soft-tissue-sarcoma\/types.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">which takes root<\/a> in tissue around joints and tendons, and the even more rare Ewing sarcoma, which cause tumors in soft tissue or bone.<\/p>\n<p>One parent told the news outlet that her 18-year-old daughter had to have her right foot amputated after her diagnosis. Bill Essayli in Los Angeles earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>(Ronaldo Bolanos\/Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>Essayli\u2019s request notes that six children in the area have been diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma. <\/p>\n<p>Federal health authorities, Essayli said, \u201crecognize that unusual patterns of cancer and community concerns regarding potential environmental exposures should be evaluated through a systematic, science-based process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 250 cases of Ewing sarcoma are diagnosed each year in the U.S.,<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/conditions-diseases\/ewing-sarcoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> according to health experts.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Although authorities have not yet established any cause or link, families believe toxic pesticides are to blame, and have pushed their homeowners association to switch to non-toxic pesticides and have urged officials to investigate environmental factors. <\/p>\n<p>The community\u2019s homeowners association, the Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corp., has in response said it is now forming a committee to review its landscaping practices, according to NBC Los Angeles. <\/p>\n<p>The Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corp. did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"First Assistant U.S. Atty.
