{"id":402538,"date":"2026-07-17T19:05:37","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T19:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/402538\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T19:05:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T19:05:37","slug":"activists-demand-transparency-after-fatal-oakland-police-shooting-nbc-bay-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/402538\/","title":{"rendered":"Activists demand transparency after fatal Oakland police shooting \u2013 NBC Bay Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Community activists in Oakland are calling for greater transparency following an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/oakland-police-critical-incident\/4113105\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">officer-involved shooting that left a man dead earlier this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Oakland police, the shooting happened Monday afternoon in a shopping center parking lot near International Boulevard and 40th Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the man lunged at officers with a knife after officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by giving commands, but he refused to comply.<\/p>\n<p>The incident began after the California Highway Patrol was investigating a homeless man armed with a knife. Police said the man ran away from CHP officers before the encounter with Oakland police.<\/p>\n<p>At a news conference Friday, community activists said they do not accept the department&#8217;s explanation and are demanding Oakland police release all body camera footage from the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They brought a gun to a blade fight,&#8221; said Cat Brooks, co-founder and executive director of the Anti Police-Terror Project.
