The American River watershed is a real beauty.\u00a0Taking into account its three major forks and lower main stem, the whole waterway flows for almost\u00a0300 miles<\/a> from the Sierra Nevada mountains near Lake Tahoe all the way out to the Sacramento River. As far as the lower reach goes, the\u00a0Effie Yeaw Nature Center is a popular spot for taking in the pretty views. On\u00a0Tripadvisor<\/a>, it’s ranked as the top thing to do in\u00a0the Northern California community of\u00a0Carmichael. One glowing review\u00a0calls<\/a> it “a hidden gem” that’s perfect for “anyone visiting Sacramento.”<\/p>\n The nature haven is tucked away on the edge of the Sacramento suburb, right along the banks of the winding river. The environmental education hub and its surrounding lands\u00a0occupy a stretch of the American River Parkway \u2014 a roughly 30-mile-long<\/a>\u00a0network of recreation areas championed by the nature center’s namesake, teacher and conservationist Effie Yeaw<\/a>. The urban greenbelt is full of wildlife, so you’ll likely see a slew of interesting critters during your visit.<\/p>\n Given the Effie Yeaw Nature Center’s conservation efforts, doing anything that could potentially disturb the plants and animals that call the place home is prohibited. This includes bringing dogs, smoking, and feeding any wildlife you see. Whether you’re coming to tour the nature\u00a0museum or planning on taking a scenic stroll on the trails, this patch of protected land teems with things to do.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n Learning activities and programs at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center<\/p>\n The Effie Yeaw Nature Center<\/a>\u00a0hosts a variety of\u00a0day camps in the summer months, many of which are centered around the great outdoors. There’s also\u00a0an\u00a0array of learning activities\u00a0on the calendar throughout the year geared towards tots and kids, among them storytime readings, hands-on craft projects, and\u00a0music experiences in the\u00a0amphitheater \u2014 these are available to\u00a0book online. Kiddos can even meet the nature center’s animal ambassadors.\u00a0However, as one visitor shared in a Google<\/a> review, the facility may be big on child-friendly fun, but\u00a0it’s still “definitely a treat for all ages.”\u00a0<\/p>\n The nature center\u00a0offers a handful of educational programs just for\u00a0adults, too, including lecture series and guided naturalist hikes. You can also tour the Effie Yeaw Nature Center’s museum to learn more about the area’s natural history. The exhibits, which\u00a0rotate throughout the year, have previously included displays on the preserve’s riparian habitat,\u00a0as well as ones about various creatures such as\u00a0fish and birds.\u00a0<\/p>\n Outside, you’ll also find Native American cultural displays, including a replica\u00a0Nisenan dwelling and a large\u00a0grinding rock. At the time of writing, the nature center itself is free\u00a0to enter, but there is an $8 fee to park a vehicle in the lot. <\/p>\n See the wildlife in Effie Yeaw’s nature study area<\/p>\n The\u00a0Effie Yeaw Nature Center is located within\u00a0Ancil Hoffman Park, one of the most scenic parks around Sacramento for outdoor fun<\/a>. The park consists of almost 400 acres<\/a> of\u00a0former ranchlands dotted with live oaks. You can take in the scenery during a walk along the oak-lined trails\u00a0that wind through the interpretive center’s\u00a0100-acre<\/a>\u00a0preserve, which stretches between the facility and the Lower American River. According to reviews on Google Maps<\/a>, visitors can expect “beautiful views of the river,” with one traveler<\/a> saying that simply “walking\u00a0by the river and enjoying nature is amazing.”<\/p>\n Do a bit of wildlife watching as you stroll along the\u00a0Effie Yeaw Nature Loop<\/a>.\u00a0This easy route spans just over 1.5 miles and will take you down to the riverbank for some lovely water views. Black-crowned night herons, snowy egrets, green herons, and Wilson’s snipes have all been spotted<\/a> in the nature preserve.<\/p>\n Peer up to catch a glimpse of the wide-eyed and mildly comical acorn woodpeckers hanging out in the trees. You may see western pond turtles<\/a>\u2014California’s only native freshwater turtle\u2014milling about on the ground, as well as\u00a0larger critters like wild turkeys, coyotes, and bobcats.\u00a0Rattlesnakes and ticks have also been known to scurry about.\u00a0Whether you’re visiting for the wildlife, scenery, or educational programs, the Effie Yeaw Nature Center offers one of the Sacramento area’s most rewarding outdoor experiences.\u00a0There are more parks and even a botanical garden to see in\u00a0California’s thriving Sacramento suburb of Carmichael<\/a>, so make time to explore the town while you’re in the area.<\/p>\n
