In July 2026, as smoke<\/a> from wildfires in Canada continued to degrade air quality in the U.S. Great Lakes region, a claim<\/a> (archived<\/a>) circulated online that U.S. President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that he would turn on a “giant faucet” in California to extinguish the fires.<\/p>\n One Facebook user shared a purported screenshot of the post that read:<\/p>\n I am going to California to turn the GIANT FAUCET exactly 37 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT and aim the beautiful water directly at Canada, under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, where it will extinguish the wildfires almost immediately. Nobody else thought of this\u2014not Newsom, not Prime Minister Carney, not even the so-called experts. They have been staring at the faucet for YEARS and never turned it. I will turn it, Canada will stop burning, and America will have clean air again. Sometimes the simplest solutions require a very stable genius!<\/p>\n (Michael J Fekete via Facebook)<\/p>\n The alleged post also circulated elsewhere on<\/a> Facebook<\/a> (archived<\/a>, archived<\/a>). Snopes readers contacted<\/a> us, asking if the president actually shared the post.<\/p>\n Trump allegedly published the Truth Social post on July 18, 2026, according to screenshots that circulated online. However, searches on Truth Social<\/a> and Trump’s Truth, a website that archives<\/a> posts from the president’s feed, did not locate such a post from that date or any other time. As such, we’ve rated it fake.<\/p>\n The fake post incorrectly replicated Trump’s Truth Social profile. While his actual account<\/a> features a red check mark and a white-and-turquoise plus sign, the fabricated post only included the red check mark \u2014 the emblem that Truth Social uses to designate verified accounts.\u00a0<\/p>\n The fake post also used California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s correct surname, which is unusual for Trump’s Truth Social posts. The president usually<\/a> calls<\/a> the governor “Newscum” when writing on the platform. According to Trump’s Truth, Trump last addressed Newsom by his actual name<\/a> on the social media platform in January 2025.<\/p>\n As of this writing, it was unclear who fabricated the post, what software they used to make it and whether the content was intended as satire.<\/p>\n The fake post circulated the day after Trump wrote<\/a> he would “hold Canada responsible” for the U.S being “unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air” from its northern neighbor’s wildfires by increasing tariffs on Canadian goods entering the U.S.<\/p>\n Trump claimed Canadian authorities had willfully neglected to manage the country’s forests and brush land, resulting in annual wildfires that cost the U.S. “billions” of dollars.<\/p>\n Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said<\/a> (archived<\/a>) on X on July 19 that the 2026 wildfire season was “one of the most intense wildfire seasons in Canadian history due to extreme heat waves and record-breaking dry conditions.” As of July 20, 2026, the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System said<\/a> (archived<\/a>) 933 active wildfires were burning across Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n Trump has previously claimed that “a very large faucet”<\/a> exists in the U.S. that could supply Southern California with water from melting snowcaps in Canada.
