There\u2019s so much to do this summer weekend in The Town. If you\u2019ve been wanting to explore poetry, the Poet\u2019s Bookshelf Book Club and Workshop<\/a> meets on Thursday at Nomadic Bookshop<\/a>, led by Oakland poet Fortino Vazquez-Edmonds. Then on Friday, stop by a night market in Oakland Chinatown to check an array of local vendors and live music. And if you\u2019re looking for new artists to add to your playlist, check out the genre-blending Arizona vocalist MaryAnne Muglia<\/a>, who is making her Oakland debut at Eli\u2019s Mile High Club.<\/p>\n

Hot Ticket in The Town this week: MaryAnne Muglia at Eli\u2019s Mile High Club<\/p>\n

MaryAnne Muglia<\/a>, a pianist and vocalist from Arizona, blends indie, jazz and pop sounds. She\u2019s heading out on tour on the West Coast for the first time to promote the release of her debut album, \u201cTry Hard,\u201d<\/a> out on Aug. 5. San Francisco indie band Lucky Break<\/a> and rock artist Luke Sweeney<\/a> are also on the bill.

The Poet\u2019s Bookshelf Book Club and Workshop<\/p>\n

Mexican American poet from Oakland Fortino Vazquez-Edmonds leads this monthly book club and workshop every fourth Thursday at Nomadic Bookshop, a new bookstore led by the folks behind indie publisher Nomadic Press<\/a> that opened in January. This month, the book club will read \u201cIncendiary Art,\u201d a collection of poems by Black poet, spoken-word performer, and playwright Patricia Smith.\u00a0

Summer Renaissance evening market<\/p>\n

The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce launched this seasonal event in June to bring more evening traffic to Oakland\u2019s Chinatown and give Oakland residents a chance to explore the neighborhood\u2019s wide variety of food and shops. The event will kick off with a lion dance performance, and the market will include local artists selling their handmade creations, food vendors celebrating Asian heritage cuisines, a Mahjong Zone, and photo booths featuring fun Asian cultural accessories. The Chamber of Commerce teamed up with Jenny and Cabbage<\/a>, an Oakland photographer and host, who will lead hands-on activities throughout the market.

\u2018Gestural Expressions\u2019 exhibit at SLATE Contemporary Gallery<\/p>\n

Five women abstract artists \u2014 Maria Burtis, Amy Donaldson, Joanne Fox, Nicole Mueller, and Karen Silve \u2014 are part of this exhibit up now through Aug. 29.\u00a0 Mueller, a painter, will lead an artist-led walk through on Saturday, July 25, and a gallery reception is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8. The gallery is open<\/a> Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dance party and pop-up market in Dimond<\/p>\n

Sinopia Wellness<\/a> and Stepping Into Wellness<\/a>, a spa and acupuncturist clinic, respectively, in Dimond are transforming their shared parking lot into a popup market and dance party. You\u2019ll get to enjoy \u201880s soul and hip-hop while browsing goodies from small vendors like handmade jewelry by Fizzycuffs<\/a> and plants and home goods by Ramses Art Garden<\/a>. You\u2019ll also be able to sip coffee by Mother Tongue<\/a>; sample authentic Egyptian cuisine from the Royal Egyptian Cuisine<\/a> food truck, or get a Tarot reading by Red Thread Intuitive<\/a>.\u00a0

Oakland rapper Richie Rich<\/a> has been part of the music industry for over three decades. He collaborated with Tupac, E-40 and The Luniz, and most recently with the Bay Area artists LaRussell, Larry June, Young JR, and Jane Handcock. In February, he sold out Yoshi\u2019s and he\u2019s back to do it all over again with five shows spread over three nights.
