Splash City, at the Regal Cinema at River Park in Fresno on Monday night.

The sold out screening marked the film’s big screen debut before its planned streaming release in the coming months.

Inspired by San Francisco.

Set in San Francisco, Splash City was inspired by the city’s well documented car break-ins.

“People are kind of breaking into windows and just causing a bunch of chaos,” Berner said. “So we wanted to document it through a film.”

But Berner said the movie is about more than crime.

“Right now people are in survival mode,” he said.

He said the film also explores how small decisions can quickly spiral into life-changing consequences.

“It’s also a good lesson that something small concerns something very big, very fast,” Berner said. “So that’s kind of one of the lessons in the film as well.”

Why Fresno?

Although Splash City is set in the Bay Area, Berner said choosing Fresno for the premiere was an easy decision.

“Fresno’s always giving me so much love, and they really helped kind of birth my music career,” he said. “When we started thinking about dates and cities, we have to start in Fresno. It’s the most important thing for me.”

According to Berner, tickets sold out within minutes.

Putting Berner’s loyalties to the test

Before the screening, FOX26 News at 10 Anchor Madison Macay put the Bay Area native through a rapid fire round of questions about his hometown favorites.

His picks included the Giants over the A’s, Joe Montana over Tom Brady, Muni over BART and E-40 over Mac Dre — though he admitted that last choice put him “in the hot seat.”

When asked to choose between Hanford, where his wife is from, and Fresno, Berner smiled before siding with the Central Valley city.

I’m sorry, baby, but I have to say Fresno because you guys have been supporting me for a long time out here in Fresno,

he said.

He quickly added a shoutout to Hanford’s Chili’s restaurant, saying he enjoys stopping there whenever he’s in town.
