FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The former Forever 21 building at Fashion Fair Mall is undergoing a dramatic transformation as demolition crews clear the site for a new sports-focused retail concept from Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The retailer’s planned “House of Sport” store is being built at the mall near Shaw and First avenues. The location is expected to feature a rock-climbing wall as well as soccer, baseball and golf training cages.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

During demolition of the former Forever 21 building, construction crews also discovered a time capsule that had been installed in 1970 during construction of the former Weinstock’s Department Store.

Action News previously inquired about the capsule in 2022 after discovering a brass plaque marking its existence.

According to the general manager of Fashion Fair Mall, the time capsule was safely removed before demolition work on the Forever 21 building began.

The capsule is now secured by mall management. As stated on the plaque, it is scheduled to be opened in 2070, marking 100 years since the original structure was built.
