SAN DIEGO (FOX5\/KUSI) \u2014 San Diego city crews installed new traffic signs Tuesday morning along a busy two-lane corridor in San Ysidro, including reduced speed limits near an elementary school.<\/p>\n
The changes are part of the city’s new Speed Management Plan, a safety initiative designed to slow traffic on some of San Diego’s busiest streets and reduce the risk of serious crashes.<\/p>\n
The effort falls under the city’s broader Vision Zero program, which aims to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. City leaders say the plan focuses on making streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers through infrastructure improvements and traffic-calming measures.<\/p>\n
Officials acknowledge Vision Zero’s goal of reaching zero traffic deaths is ambitious, but say every fatal or serious injury crash is preventable.<\/p>\n
The speed reduction project is being funded through a federal grant, providing relief for the city’s budget while allowing safety upgrades on roughly 20% of San Diego’s highest-traffic corridors.<\/p>\n
City leaders say additional speed management improvements are expected to roll out in other neighborhoods as the program continues.<\/p>\n
