{"id":408441,"date":"2026-07-22T20:38:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T20:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/408441\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T20:38:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T20:38:10","slug":"la-county-approves-1-million-for-eaton-fire-lead-contaminated-soil-removal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/408441\/","title":{"rendered":"LA County approves $1 million for Eaton Fire lead-contaminated soil removal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A $1 million Altadena Soil Remediation Program was approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors this week, intended to help residents affected by the Eaton Fire address soil health concerns. <\/p>\n<p>The $1 million is part of a $3 million program that will fund remediation costs for lead-contaminated soil.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceexchange.caltech.edu\/topics\/sustainability\/ask-expert-sustainability\/ask-expert-fires\/francois-tissot-lead-water-soil-ash-eaton-fire\/lead-dust-ash-water-eaton-fire-francois-tissot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Caltech study<\/a>\u00a0found that 90% of the homes in Altadena were built before 1975, when lead-based paint was common before being banned by the federal government in 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Eaton Fire, county public health officials contracted with Roux Inc. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/preliminary-soil-testing-results-show-elevated-lead-levels-near-eaton-fire-burn-scar\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to conduct soil testing,<\/a> during which elevated lead levels were discovered on properties downwind of the wildfire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Soil testing results from the areas downwind of the Eaton fire area revealed that lead levels in soil at many locations exceeded state residential screening levels,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rouxinc.com\/final-report-eaton-and-palisades-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Roux wrote in a Nov. 2025 newsletter.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Program funds for remediation will be prioritized for homes still standing, where pregnant women or children under 6 years old live, &#8220;given the heightened health risks lead exposure poses to these populations,&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov\/l-a-county-board-of-supervisors-advances-1m-soil-remediation-program-to-protect-altadena-families-after-eaton-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger&#8217;s office wrote<\/a> in a July 21 statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The program will fund enrollment, administration, and remediation of lead-contaminated soil on properties affected by the Eaton Fire and is expected to launch in the fall. <\/p>\n<p>Funding for the program comes from the county&#8217;s Climate Equity Account and is expected to launch in the fall. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many Altadena residents have spent months waiting for answers while insurance companies have fallen short of meeting survivors&#8217; legitimate needs.
