Scott Michael Walewski passed away at the age of 76 at his home in Long Beach, CA.<\/p>\n
Scott was a lifelong bookseller, gifted carpenter, devoted sailor, and passionate reader. Whether on land or at sea, he found joy in creating and exploring. He spent many happy years living aboard, first on his yacht in Los Angeles Harbor and later on his ketch in Long Beach. Born in Lynwood, California, he earned a degree in Literature from USC before beginning his career at Either\/Or Bookstore. After its closure, he worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken while building shelves and gathering the inventory that would become Chelsea Bookstore in Long Beach.<\/p>\n
For 20 years, Chelsea Bookstore was a cornerstone of Long Beach\u2019s literary community. Renowned for its exceptional literature, poetry, and LGBTQ+ collections, it became a gathering place for readers, writers, and artists. Scott welcomed celebrated authors and poets and hosted literary readings and live music events. In 1995, The Los Angeles Times and LA Weekly recognized Chelsea Bookstore as one of Southern California\u2019s finest independent bookstores. When Chelsea moved to a smaller location, he personally transformed a house into the bookstore, using his exceptional carpentry skills to create another warm and welcoming home for literature and community.<\/p>\n
After Chelsea Bookstore closed, Scott continued sharing his remarkable knowledge of books and music at Borders Bookstore, where customers and coworkers alike appreciated his expertise and enthusiasm. His talents as a craftsman also found a creative outlet in designing and building theater sets for Shakespeare by the Sea and Little Fish Theatre, a role he enjoyed until retiring two years ago.<\/p>\n
A true intellectual, Scott never stopped learning. His taste in music was wide-ranging and discerning, with blues, reggae, and jazz among his favorites. He also loved classic films, admiring their craftsmanship, storytelling, and enduring charm.<\/p>\n
Above all, Scott was a loving husband, partner, and best friend for 50 years. His kindness, wit, curiosity, generosity, and quiet wisdom touched everyone who knew him. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda; his brother, Tim; his nephew, Chris; his niece, Heather, and their families; and his faithful Chihuahua, Raisin.<\/p>\n
There will be a visitation on Thursday 7\/23 at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier at the Hillside Chapel from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
