A high school football star was tragically killed riding an e-scooter<\/a> to practice just one day before his 15th birthday.<\/p>\n

Hundreds gathered on the football field of Fresno\u2019s Sunnyside High School<\/a> on Wednesday night to pay tribute to Robert Peele, who was struck after riding into the path of a white sedan near the school just before 6 p.m. Friday.<\/p>\n

Robert was taken to a hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries. Police are still investigating the crash.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the crowd gathered to honor the teen released balloons into the sky in a heartbreaking remembrance ceremony.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s good to see the turnout like all these people who loved him just like we loved him,\u201d Robert\u2019s mother Nicole told ABC 30<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Robert was killed by a sedan while riding an e-scooter to football practice. ABC<\/p>\n

The grieving mom said Robert\u2019s family lovingly nicknamed the popular football star \u201cBudda.\u201d<\/p>\n

His older brother Sammie Little said the family was devastated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll this love and support that we\u2019re getting right now, this is what\u2019s really keeping us going,\u201d he told the outlet.<\/p>\n

The driver of the white sedan that struck the teen remained at the scene. ABC<\/p>\n

Robert, a popular high school football player, was just one day shy of turning 15. KSEE24\/CBS<\/p>\n

Robert\u2019s mother said he was an inexperienced rider and was not wearing a helmet while riding during one of the hottest days of the summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s only rode the scooter twice,\u201d she said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t even his.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teen\u2019s football coach rushed to the scene when he learned of the deadly collision just outside the school grounds.<\/p>\n

The teen was an inexperienced e-scooter rider who was not wearing a helmet, his mother said. ABC<\/p>\n

The crash occurred near Fresno\u2019s Sunnyside High School. ABC<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we saw him get into the ambulance and send off, we were just praying and hoping,\u201d said Sunnyside Varsity Head Football Coach Giovanni Guzman. \u201cWe had to come back to practice because the boys didn\u2019t know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teen\u2019s coach expressed regret for a young life that ended too soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s never going to live to do some of the things we get to live; put on that helmet, put on those pads, run out that tunnel in front of a crowd,\u201d Guzman said. \u201cHe\u2019ll never get to step onto the field. I feel like it\u2019s our responsibility and our duty to live through him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert\u2019s teammates took a knee in prayer<\/a> in prayer after learning about the horrific crash, Guzman said. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The teen\u2019s friend Rico Brown did not leave Robert\u2019s side as he valiantly fought for his life in a hospital bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis last days on earth I spent with him in the hospital. I stayed overnight with him,\u201d the friend said. \u201cI was telling him how much I love him and how everybody else loves him.\u201d<\/p>\n
