With San Diego<\/a> Comic-Con<\/a> in full bloom in and around<\/a> the Gaslamp Quarter,<\/a> navigating downtown is going to be especially fraught this weekend.<\/p>\n

Which, hey, is part of the fun! But if that level of crowd isn\u2019t ideal for you, here\u2019s other events you can check out around the county.<\/p>\n

Friday, July 24<\/p>\n

Alabaster Jar Project Golf Tournament:<\/a> Entering its ninth year, this event benefits the titular group,<\/a> a non-profit that provides \u201clong-term housing and comprehensive support for survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.\u201d The tournament will be held on the golf course at the Rancho Bernardo Inn<\/a> (17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive) Registration begins at 10 a.m. \u2013 the cost is $190 for an individual and $700 for a four-person team \u2013 with gameplay following three hours later.<\/p>\n

Creating With Care at MCASD:<\/a> The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla (650 S. Coast Blvd.) hosts this conversation from 5-7 p.m. moderated by Mashonda Tifrere, who has not only curated 50 different exhibitions in the past 10 years, but founded ArtLeadHer<\/a> and Art Genesis,<\/a> two groups dedicated to platforming women as artists. Joining Tifrere for this discussion are artists Kenturah Davis<\/a>, Rugiyatou Ylva Jallow<\/a> and Sasha Koozel Reibstein.<\/a> Doors open at 5 p.m. for this free event \u2013 organizers ask that you RSVP<\/a> \u2013 with the discussion beginning at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

Taste of Eastlake:<\/a> Visitors are encouraged to dress for their best garden party vibes for this event from 6-9:30 p.m. at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center (2800 Olympic Pkwy). More than 40 food and beverage vendors are expected to take part, and the event will also feature a silent auction and live entertainment. The party is a fundraiser for the Eastlake Educational Foundation, with tickets<\/a> costing $85 per person.<\/p>\n

Saturday, July 25<\/p>\n

Bicycle Film Festival:<\/a> According to organizers, the festival originated in New York City in 2001 and has since spread to more than 100 cities becoming \u201ca global celebration of cycling.\u201d The festival\u2019s San Diego leg, if you will, will be held at the Museum of Photographic Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art (1649 El Prado) from 2:30-8 p.m. and features three slates of short films throughout the day: \u201cCinematic\u201d shorts, \u201cAdventure\u201d shorts, and \u201cUrban Bike\u201d shorts. A full festival pass costs $35, but for $22 you can watch one set of films.<\/p>\n

Eastside Story Car Show & Concert:<\/a> Just north of the Convention Center, at Broadway Pier (1000 The Embarcadero), you can come and get a taste of old-school wheels and tunes from 3-10 p.m. with performances from funk legends the Bar-Kays<\/a> and NYC freestyle pioneers the Cover Girls,<\/a> among others. General admission costs<\/a> $45, but a $100 VIP ticket includes reserved seating, access to a separate bar at the event and a copy of a special Eastside Story comic book.<\/p>\n

Hella Plants Market:<\/a> Billing itself as \u201cthe ultimate plant experience,\u201d this event has spread in various formats to Southern California and debuts in San Diego at the Soap Factory (2995 Commercial St.) from noon-4 p.m. with plant vendors, live music, food and cocktails and workshops during the day. General admission costs<\/a> just over $7 (kids get in free), but you can upgrade to early entry at 11 a.m. through VIP package offerings, as well as reserve a spot at a separate terrarium workshop for $71.<\/p>\n

National Carousel Day:<\/a> Balboa Park\u2019s historic Dorothea Laub<\/a> carousel (1889 Zoo Place) gets her day in the sun in this free event from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with live entertainment throughout the day and, of course, free carousel rides.<\/p>\n

One More Time \u2013 a Daft Punk Tribute:<\/a> Behold, the next tribute band frontier \u2014 and the type of geeky event that thrives adjacent to SDCC. DJs Ron Diep and Ben Linsenmyer bring their stage-accurate<\/a> homage to the French techno legends to the Music Box (1337 India St.) downtown for this 21-and-up event. Doors open at 8 p.m. with San Diego\u2019s DJ Mancat<\/a> providing support starting an hour later. Tickets cost $20.<\/p>\n

San Diego Women\u2019s Chorus Pride Concert: The festival may be over, but the SDWC<\/a> will present its own celebration with two shows (Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.) at the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center (2880 Roosevelt Road). Tickets<\/a> are still available.<\/p>\n

Vista Buddhist Temple Obon Festival:<\/a> The temple opens its doors at 150 Cedar Road on Saturday and Sunday for two days of Bon Odori dance circles, Taiko drumming performances, Japanese cultural activities and discussions on Shin Buddhism. \u201cIt is a time to remember those who have come before us and to reflect with deep gratitude on how their lives made our own possible,\u201d the temple says on its website. The event runs from 2-8 p.m. both days and admission is free.<\/p>\n

Sunday, July 26<\/p>\n

Convivio\u2019s \u201cRock & Roll Revival\u201d:<\/a> This event is a fundraiser for Convivio,<\/a> a non-profit group that says its mission is to cultivate comradery and \u201cpromote all things Italian.\u201d For this 18-and-up event, guests are invited to bust out their best 1950\u2019s attire while a DJ plays popular music from the era. From 5:30-9:30 p.m. at AmiciBar (250 W. Date St.) in Little Italy. Tickets cost $50.<\/p>\n
