Federal Requirements to Impact Medicaid Users in Michigan<\/p>\n

Michigan \u2013\u00a0The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is preparing\u00a0to implement\u00a0federally required changes to\u00a0Medicaid\u00a0due\u00a0to the passage of H.R. 1.\u00a0Among the changes are\u00a0new work requirements and more frequent eligibility checks for\u00a0some\u00a0individuals\u00a0enrolled in\u00a0the\u00a0Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHealth\u00a0care\u00a0coverage plays\u00a0a critical\u00a0role in helping people access preventative care, manage chronic conditions and stay healthy,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Amy Epkey, MDHHS acting director. \u201cOur priority is helping\u00a0beneficiaries\u00a0understand\u00a0these new requirements so\u00a0they can comply and\u00a0we can keep as many eligible Michiganders covered as possible.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beginning in January 2027, certain HMP members between the ages of 19 and 64 may need to meet new work requirements or qualify for an exemption to maintain coverage. People who are not exempt will be able to meet the requirements through various approved activities including working, volunteering, going to school or participating in a work program. Most HMP beneficiaries will also transition from annual renewals to six-month renewals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Individuals who qualify for an exemption\u00a0will not be subject to the new work requirements. Exemptions<\/a> include, but are not limited to, women who are pregnant or newly postpartum, American Indians and Alaska Natives, some individuals with complex health needs and certain caregivers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEven with these new federal bureaucratic hoops, no one should assume they will lose coverage,\u201d said Meghan Groen, MDHHS Health Services chief deputy director and state Medicaid director. \u201cMany who need to meet this new eligibility requirement may already be doing so through work, school or other approved activities. Many others may qualify for an exemption.\u201d<\/p>\n

MDHHS is reviewing newly released federal guidance and working to update systems, train staff and develop educational materials to prepare for these\u00a0changes.\u00a0As part of that effort, MDHHS\u00a0has\u00a0launched a\u00a0community\u00a0partner toolkit<\/a>\u00a0with resources organizations can use to share information\u00a0with constituents\u00a0and help beneficiaries prepare\u00a0for these upcoming changes.\u00a0MDHHS has also launched a public awareness campaign and plans to\u00a0further\u00a0expand outreach efforts as implementation\u00a0of Medicaid changes\u00a0approach.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Implementation of the new rules will happen over time and not everyone will be affected right away.\u00a0HMP beneficiaries\u00a0will\u00a0receive\u00a0information and notices as changes approach and\u00a0additional\u00a0details become available.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

At this time, MDHHS encourages anyone with Medicaid coverage to:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Make sure their information is\u00a0current\u00a0in their MI\u00a0Bridges account.\u00a0\u00a0
\nWatch for\u00a0and read\u00a0notices from MDHHS\u00a0regarding\u00a0their health\u00a0care coverage.\u00a0\u00a0
\nRespond promptly to any requests for information from MDHHS.\u00a0
\nVisit\u00a0Michigan.gov\/HMP<\/a>\u00a0for updates and\u00a0additional\u00a0information about work requirements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

MDHHS will continue providing updates as planning\u00a0for these changes\u00a0progresses and\u00a0additional\u00a0details become available.\u00a0<\/p>\n
