San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Wednesday that 18 people were charged with unlawful assembly and resisting an officer after an unpermitted block party during Pride weekend.

Police in riot gear had stormed a so-called “Stud Alley” block party on June 27 in a chaotic scene that led to 20 arrests.

Stud Alley, an unauthorized annual block party held in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood during Pride weekend, has taken place for six years. The event drew hundreds last year, but police monitored the party then rather than shutting it down, KQED reported.

But this year, the organizers said they wouldn’t host an event but reminded people that “every alley is Stud Alley.”

At approximately 10:58 p.m. that day, officers encountered an unsanctioned and unpermitted block party with 300 attendees and a D.J. on the 100 block of Kissling Street. Officers gave an order to disperse for the unlawful assembly.

The D.J. complied but the partygoers did not, the department said, and officers tried to disperse the crowd. Two people resisted, the department said, and officers arrested them.

A new party formed again at Washburn Street with 200 people, officers said, and police shut that down, too. The department said that makeshift barricades had been set up to keep officers at bay.

Video shared on social media show an army of cops with batons and helmets descending on an alleyway in the middle of the night as they shove attendees and try to disperse the crowd. A lot of noise and yelling can be heard.

“Move! Move! Move!” officers can be heard repeatedly yelling at the crowd.

Eighteen people were arrested in this incident, the same ones charged by Jenkins. Two officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries from it, she said.

An investigation remains active, Jenkins said, with all 18 invididuals arraigned Thursday.

In addition to the clash between police and partygoers, there were reports of vandalism throughout that night. Both locations had anti-police graffiti spray-painted on walls, with pictures depicting phrases including “F– SFPD,” “No cops at pride” and “Pigs choke and die.”

A video also showed two Waymos with hazard lights blinking, which police said attendees vandalized and made inoperable.

Those were not the only controversial arrests during San Francisco’s Pride Weekend. Scenes at the city’s Trans March turned violent as marchers turned on cops and stomped a police car, after officers moved to arrest a person allegedly committing graffiti as well.

LGBTQ activists and their allies have cried foul on the police involvement.

Socialist city supervisor Jackie Fielder submitted inquiries to the mayor’s office over the perceived aggressiveness of the police responses, KQED reported.

“I was deeply concerned to see video footage and reports of San Francisco police officers clashing with San Francisco residents and visitors participating in Pride activities in two separate incidents: Trans March and an event known as ‘Stud Alley,'” Fielder said.
