As the barns and farmhouses gave way to the glamorous golden age architecture we know today in the 1920s, landmarks like the Chinese, Egyptian and El Capitan theaters were born.

Jennifer Aniston’s star on the Hollywood Walk of FameCredit: Photo by Scarlet Sappho/Flickr

By midcentury, a new generation of boosters decided the sidewalks themselves should telegraph that Hollywood was the movie capital of the world. In 1953, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pitched the first version of what a “Walk of Fame” might look like. By 1960, workers had installed the first batch of 8 permanent terrazzo plaques in the sidewalk for Olive Borden, Ronald Colman, Louise Fazenda, Preston Foster, Burt Lancaster, Edward Sedgwick, Ernest Torrence and Joanne Woodward.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong in 1979Credit: Photo by Tony Barnard/ Los Angeles Times Photographic Collection/University of California, Los Angeles.
