Republican gubernatorial hopeful Steve Hilton promised to bring back the \u201cCalifornia dream<\/a>\u201d and accused Democrats of abandoning Latino voters during a campaign stop in Los Angeles County.<\/p>\n

Hilton, who is running to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a>, rallied supporters in Bell Gardens, where many attendees wore \u201cLatinos for Hilton\u201d shirts as he pitched himself as the candidate for working-class Californians.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s fix California together<\/a>!\u201d a fired-up Hilton told the crowd at Cristo Rey Lutheran Church.<\/p>\n

The candidate for Governor of California was joined by Lieutenant Governor candidate Gloria Romero and Araceli Martinez, candidate for California State Senate District 30. Andy Johnstone for CA Post<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to fight every single day between now and the election,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The British-born, now US citizen candidate promised a major overhaul of California\u2019s public schools, calling the current system a \u201cdisaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLess than half the kids in our public schools can read properly,\u201d Hilton told the crowd. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to prepare our young people for the jobs of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

His plan, he said, includes \u201cbringing back skills training in every school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hilton also vowed to cut government spending, promising to \u201cget rid of ridiculous bloat\u201d and eliminate the state\u2019s annual $800 small-business tax.<\/p>\n

The candidate appeared alongside Gloria Romero, a former state senator and candidate for lieutenant governor, and Araceli Martinez, who is running for California\u2019s 30th State Senate District.<\/p>\n

Adding some old-school flair to the event, Hilton arrived in a 1948 Buick Super Eight driven by its owner, Roman Rangel.<\/p>\n

The 54-year-old Avocado Heights building contractor said Hilton\u2019s message on taxes, crime and homelessness resonated with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like what everybody else likes about Steve. He wants to lower taxes, get rid of the gas tax and do something about homelessness and crime,\u201d Rangel told The California Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s important to a lot of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to The Post, Hilton had a blunt message for voters ahead of the November election.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would you keep voting the same way and expect a different result?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe obviously need a change in California, and it\u2019s in our power to get it. You\u2019ve just got to vote for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hilton said he would focus on what he called the \u201cbasic things for everyone\u201d by cutting taxes, slashing utility bills in half and making it easier for young families to buy homes.<\/p>\n

Hilton framed the election as a choice between change and more of the same, targeting his Democratic opponent, Xavier Becerra.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe same party has been in charge for years,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you want more of the same, vote Becerra.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hilton said he wants to help Latinos and other working-class residents achieve what he called the state\u2019s promise.<\/p>\n

\u201cLatinos in California have lower rates of home ownership and employment than Latinos in other states, such as Texas and Florida, where they have different policies,\u201d Hilton said.<\/p>\n

The block party helped support local businesses, showcased local food and music, and gave away free backpacks and school supplies to help students prepare for the year ahead. Andy Johnstone for CA Post<\/p>\n

Hilton, who was born in Britain before becoming a US citizen, added: \u201cI understand what it\u2019s like to want to climb the ladder of opportunity in a new country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want that opportunity for everyone in California.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hilton also accused Becerra of \u201cdoubling down on all the policies that have hurt Latinos the most,\u201d arguing the Democrat\u2019s environmental policies would raise costs for working families.<\/p>\n

He criticized Becerra\u2019s \u201cclimate posturing,\u201d saying it would drive up gas prices and hit working Californians hardest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re the ones hit the most by the high gas prices, not the elites who are working from home, tapping away on their laptops,\u201d Hilton said. \u201cThey\u2019re not hurt by any of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecerra wants to increase your gas prices, increase your electric bill.\u201d<\/p>\n
