Former President Obama appeared in a new ad for California Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s (D) redistricting effort<\/a> on Tuesday, warning that Republicans want to steal congressional seats to \u201crig\u201d next year\u2019s midterm elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCalifornia, the whole nation is counting on you,\u201d Obama says in\u00a0the 30-second spot.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cRepublicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield enough unchecked power for two more years. With [Proposition] 50, you can stop Republicans in their tracks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s appearance is the latest effort from Newsom and his allies to tout<\/a> his redistricting plan, which California voters will have a chance to approve in a special election next month. <\/p>\n

In August, Newsom first announced plans to hold a November special election for voters to approve a ballot measure that would allow Democrats to pass a new House map ahead of the 2026 elections. This was in response to Republican redistricting efforts<\/a> in Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Proposition 50 would permit<\/a> the state legislature to bypass\u00a0the independent redistricting commission in order to pass the new maps.<\/p>\n

Obama approved of Newsom\u2019s plan shortly after it was announced in August.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSince Texas is taking direction from a partisan White House and gerrymandering in the middle of a decade to try and maintain the House despite their unpopular policies, I have tremendous respect for how Governor Newsom has approached this,\u201d Obama said in a post on the social media platform X. \u201cHe\u2019s put forward a smart, measured approach in California, designed to address a very particular problem at a very particular moment in time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recent\u00a0polling shows a majority<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>of California voters saying they approve of Newsom\u2019s redistricting push, but there has been public pushback.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), who championed the independent commission when he was governor in 2008, warned last month<\/a> that Democratic leaders should not \u201cbecome [President] Trump\u201d in their effort to push back on Republicans on redistricting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cI mean, two bad behaviors don\u2019t make a right behavior. Two wrongs don\u2019t make a right,\u201d the former governor said.<\/p>\n
