A sleepy California town known for Danish pastries<\/a>, windmills and quaint European charm is now drawing attention for a much darker mystery lurking beneath its streets.<\/p>\n

Solvang, a tiny Central Coast community about an hour north of Santa Barbara<\/a>, is home to a sprawling network of underground tunnels that have sparked years of speculation \u2014 but no clear historical explanation for why they were built.<\/p>\n

With official records failing to provide a definitive answer, rumors have rushed in to fill the void.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to tell if there\u2019s any merit to some of these stories, or if it\u2019s just fun tall tales and urban legends,\u201d Wes Leslie, owner of Secret Solvang, told SF Gate<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Leslie, whose walking tour company explores the town<\/a>\u2019s hidden history, said he has spent years digging into the mystery and recently began sharing his own underground investigations online.<\/p>\n

The tunnels have inspired plenty of colorful theories, including claims they once connected to brothels hidden beneath the charming village.<\/p>\n

Leslie recently ventured into tunnels beneath the Wine Valley Inn, capturing video of the eerie underground passages.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was not just a basement. It is a sprawling network of eerie hallways and rooms within rooms.\u201d Instagram\/@secretsolvang<\/p>\n

But Leslie said the more plausible explanation is that the passageways may have played a role during Prohibition \u2014 when alcohol was banned nationwide \u2014 potentially serving as secret storage and transport routes for booze moving between Northern and Southern California.<\/p>\n

Leslie recently ventured into tunnels beneath the Wine Valley Inn, capturing video of the eerie underground passages.<\/p>\n

The footage shows a series of dark, narrow corridors with bare walls and little decoration, leaving plenty of room for speculation about what happened there decades ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was not just a basement. It is a sprawling network of eerie hallways and rooms within rooms,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

To Leslie, the space appeared to have once been used as some kind of underground clothing store \u2014 another strange chapter in Solvang\u2019s hidden history<\/a> that continues to fuel curiosity among locals and visitors alike.<\/p>\n

He told SF Gate that other nearby hotels also have similar tunnels underneath, though access between them don\u2019t exist anymore.<\/p>\n

Alisal Cellars, an underground event space, is also another interesting landmark in the town, as it used to be a wine tasting room only accessible through steps down from a sidewalk.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people have mentioned that Alisal Cellars \u2026 had this tunnel that would basically span the whole length of the street,\u201d Leslie told SF Gate. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine why they would need a tunnel that stretches that far, but, you know, that\u2019s the story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Solvang was founded<\/a> on January 12, 1911, by a group of Danish-American educators who purchased 9,000 acres of land to establish a cultural and educational colony. New buildings were constructed in the Danish provincial style, Danish-style windmills were erected and many streets were given Danish names.<\/p>\n

Its preservations of Danish-style architecture draw tourists to the city to this day.<\/p>\n
