(Image from food bank video)<\/p>\n<p>The J<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegofoodbank.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acobs &amp; Cushman San Diego Food Bank<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/feedingsandiego.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Feeding San Diego<\/a> each received $1.5 million in emergency funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prebysfdn.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prebys Foundation<\/a> on Thursday to counter federal funding cuts.<\/p>\n<p>San Diego County is projected to lose an estimated $200 million in funding for CalFresh, California\u2019s version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SNAP<\/a>, the federal food assistance program previously known as food stamps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our community safety nets start to fray, as they are now, we must act quickly, and<br \/>strategically,\u201d said Prebys Foundation CEO Grant Oliphant. \u201cPreventing hunger among our<br \/>fellow San Diegans should be non-negotiable, along with sustaining a robust local network of<br \/>food suppliers and farmers who can keep our neighbors from falling into hunger and<br \/>malnutrition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each $1.5 million grant will help expand emergency food distribution, support local farms, and \u201censure equitable access to nutritious food as federal resources diminish,\u201d according to the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe San Diego Food Bank serves an average of 400,000 people each month across the<br \/>county,\u201d said Food Bank CEO Casey Castillo. \u201cWe\u2019re anticipating a 60% increase in the monthly meal gap \u2014 over seven million missed meals \u2014 at a time when federal food supplies are declining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The grants are part of <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/life\/2025\/09\/25\/philanthropic-leaders-urge-community-to-rally-behind-united-for-san-diego-effort\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United for San Diego<\/a>, a joint philanthropic initiative by the Prebys Foundation, Price Philanthropies, and the San Diego Foundation, created to support local communities impacted by cuts to federal programs that provide housing, food, and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>San Diegans can donate at <a href=\"http:\/\/SDFoundation.org\/unity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SDFoundation.org\/unity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Food distribution at the Jacobs &amp; Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
