This weekend, the Long Beach Landmark Theatre Company invites audiences to unplug \u2014 and be enthralled.<\/p>\n
As part of their special \u201cUnplugged\u201d matinee performances, the company presents \u201cJagged Little Pill: The Musical\u201d in a fresh, intimate way.<\/p>\n
Inspired by MTV\u2019s iconic Unplugged series and NPR\u2019s Tiny Desk ethos, select daytime shows spotlight music and story in a stripped-down, acoustic-forward format.<\/p>\n
Presented alongside Landmark\u2019s full-evening productions \u2014 which feature dynamic design and high-impact visuals \u2014 the Unplugged Matinees provide a compelling alternative perspective to this captivating musical, the story of a family\u2019s resilience and healing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are leaning into the limitations of performing in a gorgeous sun-lit space,\u201d explains producing director Jay Dysart, \u201cand turning it into an asset instead of a limitation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The matinees, taking place in Long Beach\u2019s First Congregational Church, embrace the natural light of Landmark\u2019s sanctuary, pairing muted lighting and simplified staging with a largely acoustic orchestration.<\/p>\n
This unique, immersive experience highlights the raw and relatable emotion of Alanis Morissette\u2019s music and the narrative crafted by Academy Award-winning writer Diablo Cody.<\/p>\n
Isn\u2019t it ironic? Not really. It\u2019s a fresh and engaging take on a classic jukebox musical.<\/p>\n
Main stage performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 7 p.m. The \u201cUnplugged\u201d Matinees take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 23.<\/p>\n
Tickets range from $40 to $70 for main stage performances and $25 to $35 for the \u201cUnplugged\u201d shows, and are available at lblandmark.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2018The Streisand Effect\u2019<\/p>\n Broadway star Melissa Errico pays tribute to an icon in the debut of her new concert, \u201cThe Streisand Effect,\u201d at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center next week.<\/p>\n The show is a shimmering homage to Barbra Streisand and the songbook that shaped a generation.<\/p>\n Accompanied by a stellar quartet that includes Randy Waldman, Streisand\u2019s pianist of more than 40 years, Errico will perform selections that reflect both her artistry and her admiration of a musical legend.<\/p>\n Audiences can expect luminous interpretations of favorites like \u201cSend in the Clowns,\u201d \u201cI\u2019d Rather Be Blue,\u201d and \u201cI Never Meant to Hurt You,\u201d as well as stories that trace the creative lineage connecting Streisand to composers like David Shire, Marvin Hamlisch, and Stephen Sondheim \u2014 some of whom became Errico\u2019s own mentors.<\/p>\n A beloved presence on Broadway (\u201cMy Fair Lady,\u201d \u201cHigh Society,\u201d and \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d) and an acclaimed concert artist whose \u201cSondheim Sublime\u201d album was hailed by The Wall Street Journal as \u201cthe best all-Sondheim album ever recorded,\u201d Errico brings her signature blend of intelligence and emotional depth to this intimate new show.<\/p>\n For a special experience, guests can add a pre-show meal and dine on stage before the performance.<\/p>\n The shows will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 12 and Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
