Los Angeles, Calif. (July 27, 2026) \u2014 Today, hundreds of thousands of Haitian immigrants across the country and thousands here in California will lose Temporary Protected Status (TPS), stripping away their work authorization and immigration protections after many years of living, working, running businesses, and raising families here. The California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) stands in solidarity with Haitian communities as they face this moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t a paperwork change \u2014 nurses, caregivers, and small business owners who\u2019ve spent years caring for our communities suddenly face the loss of their livelihoods and the threat of being torn away from their families,\u201d said CIPC Supervising Policy Manager Edgar Ortiz. \u201cTPS exists because Haiti isn\u2019t safe to return to, and this humanitarian program has saved countless lives. Haitian immigrants have shown up for this country for nearly two decades. It\u2019s time we show up for them \u2014 with real support, not just words.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s termination follows the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling in Trump v. Miot, which cleared the way for this administration to end TPS despite a factual record showing the decision was driven by racial animus. TPS, asylum, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) are not separate fights \u2014 they constitute a critical inflection moment for the country, and this administration has made clear that when it comes for one, it comes for all.<\/p>\n
Through state funding that CIPC helped secure, legal assistance is available to support people and help them understand how today\u2019s change impacts them and their families, and what other immigration relief may be available.
