FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — The greenhouse conditions inside the hoop house at June Moua’s Fresno County farm are extremely warm and humid so that she can grow ginger.<\/p>\n
“We started using shade, and everything started growing well and growing healthy,” she said.<\/p>\n
Moua dug up some of the young ginger that is ready for harvest. The pungent smell of the root and the stem lets you know it doesn’t get any fresher than this.<\/p>\n
“They already have rooting but the longer you wait, the bigger they become,” she said.<\/p>\n
“You have to create the humidity, create the environment and the climate has to be perfect for it,” says UC Small Farm Advisor Michael Yang.<\/p>\n
This place is known as the Dream Farm, a place where she dreams of growing anything customers need.<\/p>\n
“Sometimes they use the leaves, sometimes they use the root only,” Moua said.<\/p>\n
Moua sells her produce in Southern California farmers’ markets ranging from Pasadena to LA to Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n
They are very popular in Beverly Hills,” Moua said.<\/p>\n
This plant is turmeric. Popular in powders and teas, but the crop won’t be ready for harvest until November.<\/p>\n
“If they know how to use the green, they use the green as a juicer, so when they’re pressed with other commodities like beets, carrots, they’re pressed with it,” Moua said.<\/p>\n
“A lot of people use it — not just the Asian community,” Yang said. “People all over the world.”<\/p>\n
Moua says the turmeric root gets cut into finger shapes for the market.<\/p>\n
“It tastes better,” Yang said. “You don’t store it. It’s fresh.”<\/p>\n
“We produce it,” Moua said. “It’s going to be much healthier than buying from other places, other countries.”<\/p>\n
