Here\u2019s what to know \u2013 NBC 7 San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/tag\/fda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a> has recalled a commonly prescribed thyroid medication.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/tag\/recalls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recall<\/a> involves levothyroxine sodium tablets that are used to treat hypothyroidism and decrease the size of enlarged thyroid glands, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/levothyroxine-oral-route\/description\/drg-20072133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA said they had been functioning as &#8220;subpotent drugs,&#8221; meaning they had less of an active ingredient and were ultimately less effective.<\/p>\n<p>Major Pharmaceuticals packaged and distributed the recalled tablets, while Cardinal Health also distributed some of the recalled products.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve different dosages and cartons from the two companies were listed in the FDA&#8217;s recall notice. You can read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/ires\/index.cfm?Event=99399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">full list here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The recalled drugs were distributed nationwide, but the FDA did not specify the number of recalled tablets<\/p>\n<p>The FDA issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/industry-guidance-recalls\/recalls-background-and-definitions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Class II recall<\/a> on July 13. A Class II recall means the involved products &#8220;may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Food and Drug Administration has recalled a commonly prescribed thyroid medication.
