SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. —

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a major increase in violent jewelry distraction thefts occurring in the area.

Deputies said that the alleged thieves have appeared in large groups, utilizing SUVs and rental vehicles with fake paper plates to lure the most vulnerable.

The majority of victims include Asian men and women between the ages of 50 and 70 years old, the sheriff’s office said.

These scammers may appear friendly and non-life-threatening, using approachable tactics such as asking for directions, fake gifts, hugs, “blessings,” or requests for assistance to distract people while secretly removing valuable jewelry, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies warn that several instances have become violent and left many victims significantly injured, including leaving one victim clinging to a speeding vehicle.

Recent incidents have been reported at high-traffic business areas, including Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, 99 Ranch Market and SF Market.

Authorities advise the public to keep expensive jewelry covered or leave it at home and never allow strangers to place jewelry, scarves, or gifts around your neck.

“Be cautious of unsolicited hugs, blessings, or unnecessary physical contact.
Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in parking lots and shopping centers,” the sheriff’s office said. “If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and leave the area.

Officials advise those who witness suspicious activity or find themselves in a similar situation to report it immediately and to call 911.

Victims are asked to preserve evidence left at the scene and make note of vehicle and suspect descriptions.

The sheriff’s office said it partnered with CrimeStoppers and is urging the public to help in identifying potential suspects. Those who submit tips can remain anonymous and are eligible for cash rewards.

See news happening?
