US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he had no need for intelligence from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Iran\u2019s Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility, dismissing the site as \u201cnot a big problem,\u201d and saying that the Israeli leader was only going to bring it up at their meeting later in the day,\u00a0because \u201che wants me to stay involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments came as he was set to host Netanyahu for a meeting, their first since the outbreak of the war at the end of February, and amid reports that ties between the leaders had become strained as the conflict lingered without a clear resolution.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Fox News, Trump expressed his irritation with Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need Bibi to tell me\u201d things related to intelligence on the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site. \u201cBibi\u2019s telling me that because he wants me to stay involved. We know exactly what\u2019s going on,\u201d Trump insisted.<\/p>\n

The US president also vented frustration that Netanyahu ostensibly mentioned Iranian construction at the underground site publicly: \u201cI heard Bibi announce that. I said, Why didn\u2019t you just tell it to me? Why\u2019d you have to announce it to the world? I know exactly what\u2019s going on at Pickaxe,\u201d he repeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a big problem,\u201d Trump continued. \u201cWe took out their nuclear sites, and we\u2019ll have to take out Pickaxe if we don\u2019t make a deal. [If] we don\u2019t make a deal, we\u2019ll take it out very easily.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Trump claimed Netanyahu \u201cannounced\u201d intelligence indicating Iranian activity at Pickaxe, however, the prime minister has not spoken about the nuclear site publicly.<\/p>\n

Some of the reports on purported Iranian activity at the site<\/a> have, however, been attributed to unnamed Israeli officials.<\/p>\n

Trump also claimed he \u201ccould take out most of their bridges in less than an hour,\u201d and all of Iran\u2019s power plants within a day. He further claimed he saved Israel by stopping Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I weren\u2019t president today, Israel would not exist,\u201d said Trump.<\/p>\n

While the US and Israel hit multiple Iranian nuclear sites in the 12-day war last year and in the latest conflict, Pickaxe Mountain has not been hit by the US or Israel. Trump has threatened to bomb it a number of times.<\/p>\n

Iran has not allowed the UN\u2019s nuclear watchdog access to the Pickaxe Mountain site. International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi said Iran in 2021 declared its \u201cintention to have nuclear activity\u201d there.<\/p>\n

Pickaxe Mountain, whose peak rises to some 1,600 meters above sea level, is \u200clocated 220 kilometers (140 miles) south of Tehran and 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Natanz nuclear complex.<\/p>\n

There were two enrichment plants in operation at Natanz \u2013 one above and one below ground. The UN nuclear \u200bwatchdog has said the above-ground one was destroyed. The other, underground one was likely at least badly damaged.<\/p>\n

US Vice President JD Vance, who has recently voiced criticism of Israel that bordered<\/a> on the conspiratorial, will also attend the meeting between Netanyahu and Trump, the Prime Minister\u2019s Office told The Times of Israel.<\/p>\n

A source in Netanyahu\u2019s office sought to give a more upbeat look at the meeting, saying that Netanyahu and Trump would discuss how to \u201cwin the war\u201d that their two countries launched on Iran on February 28 in a bid to destabilize its regime and destroy its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the prime minister enters the White House at the invitation of President Trump, few allies have met so often and few alliances have achieved more in such short a time,\u201d said the official.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump and the prime minister will discuss the defining issues of our time and how to leverage our great alliance to win the war and forge lasting peace,\u201d the official said. \u201cPeace through strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to discussing ongoing tensions with Iran, efforts to advance the Israel-Lebanon framework deal, as well as the Abraham Accords, would also be on the agenda during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s imminent Oval Office meeting with US President Donald Trump, a White House official told The Times of Israel.<\/p>\n

The US wants to see Israel carry out additional withdrawals from Lebanon \u2014 something Netanyahu is reticent to approve ahead of his upcoming October election.<\/p>\n

Both leaders have also spoken about expanding the Abraham Accords, but that appears unlikely given due to the current Israeli government\u2019s opposition to any concessions to the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Trump declared last week that a civil nuclear deal that his administration signed a day earlier with Saudi Arabia would be conditioned on Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords.<\/p>\n

However, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told the Axios news site that the agreement being sent to Congress this week for review does not contain such a provision and Trump admitted on Monday that he hasn\u2019t even discussed the purportedly new condition with Saudi leaders.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu took off for the US on Monday and is set to participate later Tuesday in the funeral of US Senator Lindsey Graham, the long-serving South Carolina hawk who died suddenly earlier this month at 71.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu spoke at a memorial dinner for Graham on Monday night, and was expected to meet with other senior US officials after attending other services for the late senator, according to his office.<\/p>\n

Katz: US preventing Israel from striking Iranian energy sites<\/p>\n

The comments came as Defense Minister Israel Katz revealed that US aircraft were taking off from Israel to participate in the strikes on Iran, and that Israel was keen to also bomb Iranian energy sites, but was being held back by the US.<\/p>\n

Katz said in an interview with the pro-government Channel 14 news channel on Tuesday that the US was stopping Israel from striking Iranian energy targets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe very much want to strike Iran\u2019s energy targets. The United States is not approving it at the moment because of the concern that Iran would attack neighboring countries, causing a global oil crisis,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cAs far as we\u2019re concerned, we\u2019re prepared to set [Iran] back 40 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katz also said the Iranians know they were being bombed by US aircraft taking off from Israel, but have not been attacking Israel because \u201cthere is deterrence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact is that, at the moment \u2014 and this could change within an hour \u2014 the Iranians have been firing at everything, apart from one country, the State of Israel,\u201d Katz said. \u201cThey know that American aircraft are taking off from here, and refuelers are taking off from here, to strike.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis does not mean [we know] what will happen tomorrow. It means what our response will be. I announced, the prime minister announced, we made it absolutely clear: If they fire at Israel, we will strike [back] with full force,\u201d Katz added.<\/p>\n

The US on Saturday launched its 13th consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran, in the largest reigniting of the conflict since an April ceasefire. The US has since halted the strikes, with Trump saying that he wanted to give space to talks.<\/p>\n

Iran responded with drone strikes at Arab states that host US military bases, and has said it would withhold its fire as long as the US continued to do so.<\/p>\n

Pakistani and Qatari mediators have been working to revive an interim deal that the US and Iran reached last month to commence peace talks. Israel is not a party to the agreement or the talks, and Israeli officials have assailed the agreement for failing to secure concrete concessions from Iran on its nuclear program.<\/p>\n
