A Fresno County judge set the juvenile murder trial<\/a> for Thursday for the accused driver in the April 2025 execution-style shooting death of Clovis teen Caleb Quick, according to the District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

Cassie Michael faces a murder charge plus an enhancement for allegedly taking part in a crime involving a gun. She was 16 on April 23, 2025, when she allegedly served as the getaway driver<\/a> for her 16-year-old boyfriend, Byron Rangel, who is accused of pulling the trigger in the killing.<\/p>\n

The trial was set to proceed on Tuesday but a Juvenile Justice Center judge granted the DA\u2019s Office two more days for scheduling reasons, according to the Taylor Long, a spokesperson for the office.<\/p>\n

One of Michael\u2019s attorneys, Jeff Hammerschmidt, previously confirmed prosecutors have not offered any plea deal<\/a> to the teen girl. He has said the evidence does not show Michael was aware of the gun in the possession of Rangel or that he intended to use it.<\/p>\n

Police have alleged Rangel followed Quick, who was 18, into the parking lot of a McDonald\u2019s on Herndon and Willow avenues and fired a silver .357 Smith & Wesson into the back of the head of the victim.<\/p>\n

Police said during an earlier hearing Rangel had inherited the gun from his grandfather, but investigators never found the bullet that struck Quick so they could not test to see if it came from Rangel\u2019s handgun.<\/p>\n

Clovis police alleged the teen couple wanted to carry out a revenge plot against Quick. They believed he committed a sexual assault on Michael\u2019s friend at a party 10 days<\/a> before the killing.<\/p>\n

The hearing set for Thursday will be a murder trial but because it involves a defendant who was a minor during the crimes alleged, it will not use a jury. A judge will determine if the facts presented in the courtroom prove the teen was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, which is the same standard in a jury trial.<\/p>\n

The attorneys have estimated the trial will last 10 days.<\/p>\n

The execution-style killing of Caleb Quick<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege Michael arrived with Rangel on the night of the slaying in a white Tesla. The McDonald\u2019s was known as a teen hangout where many gathered for what they called \u201cFry Night,\u201d a loose social hour that followed a church youth group function.<\/p>\n

Michael and Rangel left before she returned alone, according to testimony and surveillance footage shown in an earlier hearing. Prosecutors allege that showed an attempt to provide an alibi for Rangel, but the defense argued it showed Michael was not aware of Rangel\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n

Rangel returned to the eatery later in the night, now dressed in all black, including a surgical mask and hoodie, police say. He did not interact with anyone as he waited for Quick to exit.<\/p>\n

Surveillance video showed a person dressed in black walking behind Quick and a couple of other teens before firing the fatal round. Michael was seen in other surveillance video picking up Rangel in a nearby neighborhood.<\/p>\n

Rangel is set to return Sept. 1 for a transfer hearing to determine if he can be tried as an adult.<\/p>\n
