Residents in a West Los Angeles neighborhood are living in fear over what they described as constant disturbance and vandalism from homeless individuals.

Homeowner Sassan Nedjati said over the years, the issues seemed to have grown worse.

“At first, it was okay, but recently, it’s getting really bad,” he told KTLA’s Jillian Smuker. “Once a week we have this [happening].”

On Monday morning, when Nedjati stepped outside to walk his dog, he found a homeless woman covered in a blanket, sleeping on his front porch.

“My wife and my daughter, we got scared,” Nedjati said. “I asked her nicely to leave, but she ignored me. I had no choice but to call the cops.”

But before officers could arrive, his surveillance camera captured the woman leaving the porch and walking over to his parked vehicle. She grabbed a rock and vandalized the car, leaving behind more than $1,000 in damages.

Nedjati said the incident was not the first encounter he or his neighbors have experienced with homeless individuals.

Security footage showed a homeless man using his hose to take a shower outside and another incident of a man plugging electronic devices into an outlet near his driveway. Cameras also captured a string of unknown individuals knocking on their front door or lurking around.

Nedjati had called the police multiple times to report the incidents, but said police response is often delayed and there has been no impact on the continued disturbances.

He said the constant fear of who might show up at his front door has left his family feeling distressed every day.

“My daughter cried the whole day,” he said. “We don’t feel safe here anymore. My kids don’t feel safe. We just want to have a normal life.”

His next-door neighbor, Christopher Scott, moved to the neighborhood just over a year ago after losing his home in the Palisades fire. He said the difference in homeless activity that he sees daily is staggering.

“It was a complete shock,” he said. “Mentally unstable homeless people screaming as they’re walking in the middle of the street.”

Both neighbors acknowledged that homelessness is a complex issue and they empathize with those who might be struggling, but they agreed that residents should not be fearful of walking out their front door.

“With two kids, it makes it difficult to explain what’s safe and what’s not,” Scott said. “It makes it unsafe to have kids go out on their own.”

Both families said they are considering whether it’s time to leave the neighborhood.

“It’s so sad, but I think it’s time for us to leave,” Nedjati said.

A spokesperson from Mayor Karen Bass’ office told KTLA they are aware of the reported issues and are working to address the neighborhood concerns.

A Council District 5 spokesperson said their office has dispatched a homeless outreach team to the area to assess the situation.
