Your Loons are hitting the pitch at Allianz Field for the second-consecutive week, this time welcoming everyone’s favorite sophomore side, San Diego FC. It’s the third game back since the World Cup break ended, the last game before the Leagues Cup break starts, and another excellent opportunity for you to rep the Black and Blue while they play right in front of you. There’s a lot going on; try to keep up!

When you isolate the form from the actual gameplay, it looks — admittedly — pretty bleak. Let me assure you, though, the sky is not falling. After losing to the bottom team in the conference (SKC), the Loons showed signs of righting the ship with a draw against the top team (Vancouver). They’ve showcased a few new looks, seemingly shaken off some rust, and look like they’re a goal or two away from a real breakthrough.

Season two has been markedly more difficult than season one in MLS for San Diego FC, but the World Cup break may have been just what the doctor ordered. With key players back from injury, a return to their preferred style and pace in sight, and a pair of tight games against Dallas and Colorado showing their competitive edge, Mikey Varas’ side will be feeling better than they have for most of 2026 going into this weekend.

For the last few seasons, your Loons have been known for their defensive prowess rather than prolific goalscoring. This year, they’re tied for the third-lowest goals-scored tally in the league (19), but the expected goals metric tells a very interesting story. With a cumulative xG of 27.4 across 2026, your Loons should theoretically be in the top-half of the league for goalscoring. So why aren’t they? Throughout the season, we’ve seen Head Coach Cameron Knowles employ a variety of attacking combinations in an attempt to jumpstart his side’s finishing, using variations of the counter-attacking and set-piece-heavy strategy we’ve seen in the past. Whether it’s two attacking midfielders (Tomás Chancalay and Joaquín Pereyra) or two forwards (Kelvin Yeboah and Mamadou Dieng, most recently), we’ve seen each of these combos work at one point or another — but nothing has produced consistent goals yet. The players are clearly talented enough to create chances; they just need to put them away, as obvious as that sounds. Goal scorers are often very confidence-centric, meaning that hitting the back of the net has a cumulative effect on how they approach the game. I reckon that once one of these guys finds their breakthrough, it’ll be like water busting through a dam. The stats tell us that this team can score. The only question remaining is who will be the first to find the breakthrough?

Sophomore Slump, or Just a Bump?

After topping the Western Conference in their very first MLS season, it’s been a bit of a shock to see San Diego’s start to 2026. But, when you take a look under the hood, some pretty reasonable explanations (or excuses, if you prefer) become apparent rather quickly. The 2025 MLS Newcomer of the Year, Anders Dreyer, already has 15 goal contributions in 17 games this season, as does SD striker Marcus Ingvartsen. Those two haven’t dropped their standard or lost their legs. The absence of Chucky Lozano, though, has left big shoes to fill, and that was never going to be an easy fix. Amahl Pellegrino and Alex Mighten have tried to make up for Lozano by committee, and while they’ve both contributed, they don’t present the same threat that the Mexican winger does. Further back, a period of absence due to injury for midfield metronome Jeppe Tverskov threw off the entire team’s approach to the game. Tverskov played the second-most regular-season minutes for San Diego in 2025 (behind only Dreyer), and his ability to marshal the middle of the park and dictate distribution is what really held their style of play together. A variety of other, smaller changes to Mikey Varas’ preferred starting lineup in 2026 — paired with these larger shifts — have made it near-impossible for the second-year club to avoid a bit of a dip in the first half of the season. That said, Tverskov is back, and the new starting fullbacks (Kieran Sargeant and Oscar Verhoeven) have had time to adjust. Lozano’s impact hasn’t been replaced, but with enough of their problems either solved or within touching distance of a solution, it feels like this San Diego side is right on the edge of a return to form.

MNUFC has only played against San Diego four times, but those (approximately) 360 minutes of soccer have been absolutely electric. Their clashing styles of play have produced goals from mid-field, own goals, red cards, a Western Conference Semifinal, and seven goals apiece to make this into one of the most exciting occasions on either team’s calendar already, and it feels like that trend is primed to continue. With the visitors looking to get back to what worked in 2025 and the hosts looking to finally take advantage of the changes they’ve made in 2026, both clubs are on the cusp of a meaningful breakthrough here at the midway point of the 2026 season. History has shown us that these sides don’t like to play it safe when they come up against one another, so expect to see 90 more minutes of end-to-end, breakneck pace this weekend, and mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of seeing something you’ve never seen before — this fixture has a tendency to surprise.

Soccer is staying home this weekend — thank goodness.
