FRESNO, CA (KMJ) A nearly five-decade-old South Valley cold case has been partially solved.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office says remains discovered in an Arvin vineyard back in June of 1978 have now been identified as Michelle Louise Collier of Fresno. At the time, investigators had no way to identify the victim and the case went cold, with the woman known only as Jane Doe.

Officials say fingerprint and dental record comparisons failed, and DNA technology did not yet exist. In 2007, investigators exhumed the remains to collect a DNA sample, but no match could be found in available databases.

The breakthrough came years later through advances in forensic science and a process known as Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy. Working with the California Department of Justice, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and private forensic lab Othram, detectives were finally able to confirm Collier’s identity.

The homicide investigation remains active, but after 48 years, authorities say a Fresno family finally has answers about what happened to their loved one.

Michelle’s case remains open and KCSO is asking for anyone with information to come forward. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at (661)861-3110 or Kern Secret Witness at (661)322-4040.

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) A nearly five-decade-old South Valley cold case has been partially solved.
