In the San Diego region, thousands of families, active-duty and reserve military households, seniors and students who rely on programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/content\/sdc\/hhsa\/programs\/ssp\/food_stamps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CalFresh<\/a> are now facing delayed benefits just as grocery prices and housing costs remain high.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Local food-banks, often the safety-net when federal aid falters, are already seeing surges in demand and stepping up emergency distributions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That makes <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/everything-sd\/best-san-diego-charities-nonprofits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">community donations<\/a> more crucial than ever: giving non-perishables, funds or volunteer time does more than fill a shelf\u2014it helps keep families from skipping meals, worrying about which bill to pay, or going without basic groceries this month when their usual support has stalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To help support the efforts of our local food banks, we put together a list of some of the organizations across the county in need of donations.<\/p>\n<p>The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank<\/p>\n<p>The organization is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegofoodbank.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">largest hunger-relief nonprofit in San Diego County<\/a>, distributing tens of millions of pounds of food annually through a network of over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegofoodbank.org\/get-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">450 partner agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Location: Follow signs for shipping and receiving at 9850 Distribution Ave., Dock 0, Miramar<\/p>\n<p>Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.\u2013noon and 1\u20133 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>How to Donate: Drop-off style donations accepted on site<\/p>\n<p>Most Needed Items: Nonperishable food<\/p>\n<p>Alpha Project<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/alphaproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alpha Project<\/a> is a comprehensive nonprofit offering work-opportunity, housing, outreach and recovery services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or instability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Location: 550 14th St., East Village<\/p>\n<p>Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.\u20135 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>How to Donate: Call 619-696-6500 to schedule a donation drop-off<\/p>\n<p>Most Needed Items: Hygiene products, towels, sheets, clothing in good condition, undergarments, and nonperishable food (dependent on available space)<\/p>\n<p>San Diego Rescue Mission<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdrescue.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">faith-based shelter and recovery center<\/a> has provided emergency housing, meals, job training and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdrescue.org\/what-we-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">programs for men, women, children, and families<\/a> since 1955.<\/p>\n<p>Location: 120 Elm St., Bankers Hill<\/p>\n<p>Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.\u20135 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>How to Donate: Visit during donation hours or contact the mission for drop-off details<\/p>\n<p>Most Needed Items: Shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, umbrellas, towels, sheets, blankets, undergarments for adults and children, sunscreen, classroom supplies, and nonperishable food<\/p>\n<p>Porchlight Community Services<\/p>\n<p>Focused on food-rescue and affordability, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.porchlightcs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Porchlight Community Services<\/a> turns surplus food into nutritious groceries while promoting sustainability and dignity for clients.<\/p>\n<p>Location: 8878 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite F (behind Mic Drop Comedy, next to Denny\u2019s), Kearny Mesa<\/p>\n<p>Hours: Daily, 9:30 a.m.\u20133:30 p.m.; food distribution events by appointment Thursday, 3\u20137 p.m., and Saturday\u2013Sunday, 1\u20133 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>How to Donate: Drop-off donations accepted during operating hours<\/p>\n<p>Most Needed Items: Food, health, and beauty products<\/p>\n<p>ElderHelp<\/p>\n<p>A senior-services nonprofit, <a href=\"https:\/\/elderhelpofsandiego.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ElderHelp<\/a> ensures older adults remain independent in their homes by providing transportation, safety checks, referrals and companionship.<\/p>\n<p>Location: 9590 Chesapeake Dr., Clairemont Mesa<\/p>\n<p>Hours: Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.\u20135 p.m.;
