This comes after a controversy involving the cameras in question, with many believing that their privacy is being violated through mass surveillance. As a result, the man is being hailed as a hero.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the incident involved a 40-year-old man named Marcus Bee. A Pismo Beach resident, he is accused of driving all the way to Monterey County, a 2.5-hour-long trip, to vandalize Flock Safety Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras.

The MCSO said that Bee damaged at least three ALPR cameras in Lockwood and Bradley. This resulted in thousands of dollars worth of damage to what the sheriff’s office calls “public safety infrastructure.”

Unfortunately, the vandalism he is being accused of was caught by other nearby surveillance cameras located nearby. It wasn’t long before the MCSO used the footage to locate him and placed him under arrest.

Arrested and Charged

The 40-year-old man was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail. He is charged wtih felony vandalism, and his bail was set at $30,000.

If convicted of the vandalism charge, Bee could face up to 3 years in prison. The man could be ordered to pay fines of up to $10,000, in addition to restitution.

The MCSO took the opportunity to insist that Flock System ALPR cameras are an important investigative tool in the county. Even the Monterey County sheriff intervened, providing a statement in defense of the cameras.

Sending a “Clear Message”

According to the sheriff’s office, the cameras help law enforcement agencies “solve crimes, recover stolen vehicles, locate missing persons, and identify suspect vehicles.” The MCSO added that the cameras are used exclusively for legitimate criminal investigations.

Sheriff Tina Nieto said that Bee’s arrest “sends a clear message” to those who choose to intentionally damage the cameras. Suspects will, she said, be “identified, arrested, and held accountable.”

“Any attempts to disable these systems will not prevent us from doing our job. In this case, the suspect’s own actions were captured on surveillance cameras, leading directly to his arrest,” Sheriff Nieto added. “We will continue to aggressively investigate these crimes and seek prosecution against anyone who targets public safety infrastructure.”

Hailed as a Hero

Monterey County residents, however, thought otherwise. The MCSO’s post was flooded with comments defending Bee, even hailing him as a hero due to what they call a mass surveillance system designed to thwart their liberties.

Monterey County criminal defense attorney Chris Cain spoke about this sentiment with KSBW. He told the outlet, “Flock cameras are more than just traffic cameras. It’s actually warrantless searches and mass surveillance on everyone.”

Whether who is in the right depends on each person’s sensibilities. Still, with a clear ratio showing every citizen vilifying the authorities for their use of cameras, one can definitely say that it is a very unpopular system, to say the least.

If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don’t miss what’s coming next.

A man in Monterey County, California, is facing a vandalism charge after he allegedly damaged Flock System cameras,…

[6
7,9,8,35940,167122,167123,124444,46966,858,9140,22919
post-417857","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-california","tag-california","tag-california-headlines","tag-california-news","tag-flock","tag-flock-system","tag-marcus-bee","tag-mass-surveillance","tag-mcso","tag-monterey-county","tag-surveillance-cameras","tag-vandalism
["GET
