California drivers have erupted <\/a>over huge charges after being duped by sites that closely resemble the DMV web page.<\/p>\n

Golden State motorists have been registering their cars under NeedTags.com, a third-party that is authorized to sell DMV services<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Californians spotted it charges about $90 more than they could have just paid through the state website.<\/p>\n

When customers have tried to fight back against the company with credit card disputes, it has responded with threats of legal action.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a criminal,\u201d Allen Jensen said tearfully during an interview<\/a> with ABC 7. \u201cI\u2019ve never been to jail\u2026It\u2019s not about the money. Why is my state doing this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Another person, Allyn Peterson of San Jose, also chose to battle the charges and lost.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy problem is, why is our government enabling them? Why is it officially sanctioned by the government?\u201d Peterson said.<\/p>\n

The company also caught out an 84-year-old woman, who said she didn\u2019t \u201cread the fine print.\u201d Manuella Raquelle of Santa Cruz said she tried to email the company after she fell for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019m terribly distressed. I\u2019m 84 years old and I made a terrible mistake and pushed submit in error ,\u201d she wrote in an email to the company, which never responded.<\/p>\n

The company can be seen on Google search results as a \u201csponsored result\u201d and on the state DMV website as a \u201cDMV partner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Google ad transparency data shows Continental Green Inc. pays for the ads, and there are 73 different versions of it.<\/p>\n

A warning sign sometimes appears under the ads from Google that says: \u201cNot a government website.\u201d A legal advocate blasted the company\u2019s appearance as a DMV business partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are using this language about being a DMV business partner to create the false impression in someone\u2019s mind that you\u2019re paying the same amount as if you were on the DMV website. That\u2019s not true,\u201d Robert Herrell of the Consumer Federation of California said.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsumers are paying, in some cases, hundreds of dollars more beyond what they would pay just by going straight to the DMV website\u2026 Which I highly recommend all consumers do go to the DMV website.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company does have language on its website that says it is not a government agency and charges extra fees for what the state will do for free.<\/p>\n

California has done little to change the problem. Lawmakers sponsored a bill last year to cap fees, but the legislation has yet to pass.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can find yourself accessing services that you can get through the DMV through these online vendors and being charged huge markups on those services,\u201d California assemblymember Matt Haney said during a Transportation Committee hearing.<\/p>\n

Consumers are exasperated that Google appears to be doing more for the registration issue than the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what I learned is that\u2026Google did something for the people of California while their public servants say \u2018give me the money,’\u201d Peterson said.<\/p>\n

The state DMV told ABC 7 that it encourages consumers to use the state website and advised any third-party partner to keep their fees transparent.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe California DMV encourages customers to use its online services at dmv.ca.gov to complete transactions without incurring the additional charges of a third-party business partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DMV expects any extra fees requested by the service provider to be clear and transparent, and it expects BPA partners to adhere to the law and deliver a valuable service to their customers,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n

The NeedTags.com website appears less in search recently since Google placed a warning on it. NeedTags owner Eddy Asmerian previously said the company is \u201ccommitted to transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n
