{"id":419498,"date":"2026-07-31T14:06:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T14:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/419498\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T14:06:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T14:06:19","slug":"california-city-ca-to-settle-whistleblower-retaliation-suit-from-former-fire-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/419498\/","title":{"rendered":"California City, CA, to Settle Whistleblower Retaliation Suit from Former Fire Chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former California City fire chief\u2019s whistleblower retaliation case is headed toward resolution after the City Council approved a $1.5 million settlement, avoiding a potential trial in a dispute over code enforcement, hazardous materials concerns and command-level authority.<\/p>\n<p>Following a closed session, the council voted to approve the settlement in the civil case filed by former Fire Chief Jeremy Kosick, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kget.com\/news\/local-news\/california-city-council-approves-1-5m-settlement-for-ex-fire-chief-in-whistleblower-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">KGET.com reports<\/a>. The formal settlement agreement is still pending but is expected to be finalized \u201csooner than later,\u201d according to Councilman Ronald Smith.<\/p>\n<p>The California City Fire Department was absorbed by Kern County Fire earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Kosick, who served more than 20 years with the California City Fire Department, was appointed chief in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2024, he received a termination notice that stated \u201cthe incompatibility of your demonstrated manner of managing the city\u2019s fire department.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The whistleblower complaint was filed in November 2024, and it stated that Kosick faced retaliation after raising concerns about fire code enforcement and hazardous materials violations at local businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The suit says that Kosick was directed to overlook violations, unlock a red-tagged facility and waive fire protection requirements, including sprinklers, for certain projects. The complaint further claims he was assigned duties outside his role, including acting as a cannabis manager, despite a separate budget for that position.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Kosick\u2019s attorney said the chief \u201cremained committed to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of the community he served\u201d throughout his career.
