{"id":41998,"date":"2025-11-07T04:58:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T04:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/41998\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T04:58:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T04:58:18","slug":"86000-university-of-california-workers-to-strike-statewide-nov-17-18-daily-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/41998\/","title":{"rendered":"86,000 University of California workers to strike statewide Nov. 17-18 \u2013 Daily News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In what would be considered the largest strike in the University of California\u2019s history, more than 86,000 union nurses and healthcare professionals within its medical system announced plans Thursday to authorize a two-day strike Nov.17-18.<\/p>\n<p>The contract expiration Oct. 31 for the unionized workers comes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2025\/08\/06\/24000-union-nurses-to-begin-bargaining-with-uc-medical-system\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a tough time for UC\u2019s medical facilities<\/a>, which have been dealing with the economic challenges of rising healthcare and tuition costs at its schools and \u201cuncertainty about federal funding\u201d and \u201cunprecedented financial challenges,\u201d according to the UC.<\/p>\n<p>The three bargaining unions involved in the strike said the Oakland-based UC system has failed to \u201csettle contracts addressing the cost of living and affordability crises\u201d facing the university\u2019s most \u201cvulnerable workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 represents 40,000 service and patient care technical workers at the UC, while the University Professional and Technical Employees-Communications Workers of America Local 9119 represents 21,000 healthcare, research and technical professionals, and California Nurses Association represents 25,000 nurses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/press-room\/university-california-underscores-good-faith-negotiations-unions-opt-strikes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A UC statement issued Nov. 6<\/a> said the planned strike is \u201can attempt to pressure the university into accepting unreasonable wage and benefit demands that would put UC in a financially precarious position and jeopardize its mission of teaching, research and public service.\u201d\u00a0 The university also said it is \u201cdisappointed that union leaders have chosen this path\u201d after months of progress at the bargaining table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile these strikes may cause disruptions, UC will remain open,\u201d according to the statement. \u201cOur hospitals and clinics have contingency plans in place to ensure patients continue to receive safe, high-quality care, although some surgeries, treatments, and appointments may face delays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A top priority, the unions said, is to halt the UC management\u2019s growing practice of short-staffing its facilities, and cutting back on resources.<\/p>\n<p>The unions also allege the UC system is using \u201cshadow beds\u201d and long emergency room wait times as a result of management\u2019s prioritization of more profitable elective surgeries. A so-called shadow bed happens when another bed is added to a room designed to have one patient. Nurses have raised concerns about patient privacy in these rooms, as well as the safety issues of navigating a room filled with medical equipment and limited space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring nearly two years of bargaining, UC has spent billions acquiring new facilities, lavishing exorbitant raises on its wealthiest executives and funding housing assistance programs to help these same ivory tower elites buy mansions or second homes \u2014 but it won\u2019t offer its frontline workers enough to pay the rent or keep pace with the skyrocketing cost of groceries,\u201d said Michael Avant, president of AFSCME Local 3299.<\/p>\n<p>The UC labor talks are progressing on a different track than a separate one with Kaiser Permanente nurses and healthcare workers.<\/p>\n<p>In the Kaiser labor talks, the United Nurses Associations of California \/ Union of Health Care Professionals recently ended its five-day strike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2025\/10\/19\/kaiser-strike-ends-without-labor-agreement-for-31000-healthcare-workers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">without a labor agreement<\/a>.
