FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) \u2014 For the first time since the case began more than a year ago, cameras were allowed inside a Fresno County courtroom Thursday as the juvenile trial of a teenage girl accused in the shooting death of Clovis teenager Caleb Quick got underway.<\/p>\n
The proceedings follow a high-profile transfer hearing in May, when a judge ruled the girl would remain in juvenile court rather than be tried as an adult.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe proceedings are deemed open because of the nature of the charges,\u201d Judge Brian Alvarez said.<\/p>\n
The defendant, whose identity is being withheld because she is a minor, appeared in civilian clothes with restraints on her wrists and ankles. Her parents sat behind her in the courtroom, while members of Quick\u2019s family watched from the opposite side.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just pray that we\u2019ll get some justice out of this,\u201d said Quick\u2019s father, Steve Quick.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors allege the girl worked with her teenage boyfriend in a plan that led to Quick\u2019s killing outside a Clovis McDonald\u2019s in 2025. They contend she drove a white Tesla used to help the alleged shooter leave the scene after the attack.<\/p>\n
Defense attorneys maintain the girl did not know the full extent of her boyfriend\u2019s intentions before the shooting.<\/p>\n
During opening arguments and pretrial discussions, both sides agreed the alleged motive stemmed from an accusation of sexual assault involving Quick. However, prosecutors sought to limit what details about that allegation could be introduced during the trial.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t a trial about the homicide victim\u2019s alleged conduct with Jane Doe, but that\u2019s what it seems it will turn into if we go down that path,\u201d Deputy District Attorney Kendall Reynolds argued.<\/p>\n
Defense attorney Sally Vecchiarelli opposed those restrictions, arguing the details are necessary to explain her client\u2019s actions and state of mind leading up to the shooting.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like he\u2019s requesting that he\u2019s allowed to use it, but that we\u2019re not,\u201d Vecchiarelli said.<\/p>\n
The defense contends the girl learned about the alleged assault and shared that information with the alleged shooter. According to the defense, Quick was killed the following day.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wants to restrict the defense from discussing what the underlying basis was for that motive, what the information was that was conveyed,\u201d Vecchiarelli said.<\/p>\n
Because the case is being heard in juvenile court, there is no jury. Instead, Alvarez will hear the evidence and ultimately decide whether the girl is guilty of the charges against her.<\/p>\n
The trial is expected to last about a week. Attorneys are scheduled to return to court Monday, when testimony is expected to begin with several witnesses taking the stand.<\/p>\n
