A mural in Sacramento’s Southside Park, created to honor Chicano and Indigenous history, was vandalized before its completion, according to the Albert M. Rojas Foundation.

Before 4 p.m. Friday, officers responded to Southside Park for a report of vandalism, the Sacramento Police Department said. The caller reported that they believed the incident was a hate crime.

Officers conducted an investigation and a bias vandalism report was taken.

The foundation said the mural was intended to tell the story of Albert M. Rojas, a late labor organizer, while also spotlighting the contributions of other leaders and activists.

“It’s a commitment, a commitment of love, and it’s a commitment for bringing history into the community. So this vandalism really broke our hearts,” Desiree Rojas from the foundation said. “It broke our hearts because this is a story, it’s a story about our community, it’s a story about the Chicano movement history, Indigenous history, and also about the incredible community of Southside Park.”

The foundation also noted that it was already struggling to raise enough funds to complete the project.
