The mother of a California teen allegedly raped by his juvenile hall therapist<\/a> said her son has run away from home \u2014 and she fears he may have visited the clinician in violation of court orders.<\/p>\n

Former jail counselor Sofia Drotts, 26, of San Francisco, is free on bail after she was hit Monday with a slew of felony charges, including\u00a0unlawful sexual intercourse<\/a>, related to her relationship with the teen. <\/p>\n

Drotts was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly\u00a0grooming and raping the teenager<\/a>, whom\u00a0she counseled at\u00a0a Contra Costa County juvenile hall<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After his release, she is accused of secretly posing as his teenage girlfriend and using a burner phone to stay in contact with him.<\/p>\n

The unidentified boy\u2019s distraught mom told The California Post that her 17-year-old son may have decided to go back to his former therapist.<\/p>\n

The teen, who believes the relationship between him and Drotts was consensual, went missing when the therapist was nabbed by cops, his mom said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just left,\u201d said the concerned mother, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her son\u2019s identity. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know where he is,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

She added that her son had been in constant contact with Drotts since his April release and that he was on a video call with her at the exact moment she was arrested by Concord Police.<\/p>\n

The mom alleged that Drotts painstakingly groomed the teen for more than two years while she provided therapy, duping the family into thinking she was a concerned caregiver.<\/p>\n

Instead of Drotts treating the the teen, his mom claimed, the therapist conned the boy into falling for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very professional, very caring,\u201d the mother explained. \u201cLike she always had my son\u2019s best interest at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

She had no idea Drotts was allegedly victimizing her son until the arrest.<\/p>\n

When she confronted her son, he said the allegations were false.<\/p>\n

Drotts is a Spanish speaker from Chicago. Her Campus<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if it was consensual?\u201d the teen asked his stunned mother.<\/p>\n

The boy then ran off and hasn\u2019t been seen by his family since \u2014 except for one occasion when he stopped home to take a shower and cut off his ankle monitor, his mom said.<\/p>\n

He also missed a probationary court date and a warrant has been issued for his arrest, she added.<\/p>\n

Drotts did not return calls for comment. <\/p>\n

She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment on charges including sexual penetration by a foreign object, sending harmful matter to a minor, oral copulation of a person under 18 years of age and possessing child pornography.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She has retained a private attorney, who declined to comment on the case. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The boy\u2019s mom said she was duped by Drotts. NBC Bay Area<\/p>\n

Investigators say Drotts began grooming the boy in 2024, when he was 14 or 15 years old.<\/p>\n

At the time, the boy \u2014 identified as John Doe in court papers \u2014 was serving two years in a Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall, where Drotts was assigned as his\u00a0therapist<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the two years in which Doe was incarcerated at the juvenile Hall, Drotts abused her position as his therapist to establish an inappropriate emotional connection with Doe, \u2018grooming\u2019 him with the objective of sexual abuse,\u201d court papers state.<\/p>\n

After the boy was released on probation, Drotts continued to serve as his therapist through Contra Costa Health and allegedly had \u201cunlawful sexual contact\u201d with him, the court papers say.<\/p>\n

Drotts was arrested by Concord police. Facebook\/Concord Police Department<\/p>\n

The documents also state that a \u201cteam of County agents and supervisors failed to identify the red flags or supervise Drotts, and so the sexual abuse continued.\u201d<\/p>\n

Attorney John Burris, who is representing the boy\u2019s family in a civil suit against Contra Costa County County, said supervisors failed to protect the boy from Drotts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very hopeful that a significant conviction occurs, to send a clear message to the to the young man that there\u2019s this is not a love affair \u2014 no matter what your feelings are,\u201d Burris said. \u201cThe young man is emotionally torn up over this.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to posts on social media and content published on a college publication website, Drotts is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.<\/p>\n

The college heaped praise on Drotts in a 2022\u00a0Instagram post<\/a>\u00a0that identified her as a psychology major with certificates in criminal justice, gender and women studies, and chicano\/a latino\/a studies.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter graduation, she\u2019s off to the Golden State to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Palo Alto University,\u201d the post read. \u201cWay to go, Sofia!\u201d<\/p>\n

Drotts identified herself as a Spanish speaker and Chicago native on an author page for a publication to which she contributed a number of articles on college life.<\/p>\n

Drotts is due back in court again in August. A police investigation into the case is ongoing.<\/p>\n
