Jane Hu/STAFF.

SAN FRANCISCO — On the 20th anniversary of his breakout album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, Andrew Bird worked with arranger Nate Thatcher to reimagine his unique world of folk rock into full orchestral works.

His Saturday performance with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Hall could have become a prestige exercise, with a storied orchestra adding girth and polish to songs already complete. Instead, it exposed the trust underneath Bird’s meticulous music. The 53-year-old was willing to let other players inhabit it, build on its promise and truly showcase his prescient vision.

The performance started with little pretense. Slim columns glowed behind a stage crowded with orchestra members. After the familiar settling in and tuning, Bird entered stage-right, followed by conductor Sarah Hicks. Bird was the central figure, but clad in a simple black suit with no tie, he resembled a wiry soloist more than folk rocker.

But Andrew Bird is no traditional soloist.

Over the course of the evening, the Illinois native handily reminded the audience of his decades-long versatility, moving fluidly between violin, guitar, voice and whistle without needing to catch his breath. What may once have seemed novel when he first emerged two decades ago now simply reflects an artist fully at ease with his craft.

Andrew Bird performs with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco on Aug 1, 2026.

He was also humble and understated, expressing his appreciation for the audience and the SFS players.

“This is the first town that’s given me love. I’ll always be grateful for you,” Bird said.

It turns out Bird and the orchestra had only rehearsed together for the first time that afternoon and for just a few hours—a fact that, for a production of this size and caliber, felt astonishing. It also underscored the trust he placed in the musicians as part of a vast, responsive organism creating the space in which he could flourish.

Indeed, the orchestra was neither backdrop nor decoration. Hicks conducted with an unusually fluid physicality, sometimes appearing to dance atop the orchestral fabric. The strings, often plucked, swelled and receded in waves. Brass and woodwind sections added warm color and reedy charm, each section interweaving in layered, melodic currents, as if the stage was breathing in harmony, waves moving through it in a shared tide.

“Banking on a Myth” showcased the orchestra at its most imaginative. The arrangement wandered with Bird’s lyrics through dense layers of strings, trumpet and percussion, conjuring the feeling of a slow jungle procession. There was a playful, elephant-on-the-march quality to its lumbering rhythm, with each orchestral section adding color instead of simply volume. From that sweeping epic, Bird’s delicate violin solo emerged, followed by his reverb-laced whistle, echoing through the perfectly acoustic hall.

Andrew Bird performs with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco on Aug 1, 2026.

Twenty years ago, The Mysterious Production of Eggs felt unlike anything else in folk rock, independent or major label. Bird’s looping, whistling and violin playing were so singular that they naturally became the story, eclipsing the remarkable complexity of the songs beneath them.

Now, those innovations no longer feel startling, allowing the compositions themselves to take center stage. Nowhere was that more evident than on “Tables and Chairs,” where melodies and textures flowed effortlessly between strings, winds and brass instead of simply doubling the original arrangement. Each section revealed a different facet of the song, transforming it from a clever chamber pop experiment into a living orchestral work.

Similar moments surfaced throughout the evening, such as the intricate tapestry of plucked strings that animated “Skin Is, My.” Rather than making the album sound grander, the San Francisco Symphony exposed how richly layered and meticulously constructed it had always been.

After a brief intermission, the orchestra launched into Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane pour une infante défunte,” with Bird’s whistling emerging midway as a fully realized solo instrument, floating above the strings with the warmth and expressive range of a flute.

For years, Bird has borrowed from the vocabulary of chamber music to shape his own songs. Here, the relationship reversed. Instead of the San Francisco Symphony lending gravitas to a songwriter, Bird stepped into the classical canon and contributed something unmistakably his own. His whistle, luxurious in tone and impossible to mistake for anyone else’s, felt less like a novel quirk than a legitimate musical voice. It was a delicious inversion.

Andrew Bird performs with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco on Aug 1, 2026.

Bird had reflected earlier in the concert that his 20-year-old self “would have been tickled” to see him standing on stage at Davies. Before concluding the second and final encore with “Weather Systems,” Hicks took a seat off to the side and the orchestra fell silent, ceding the stage to Bird to build the song piece by piece with the simple looping machine that first captivated audiences two decades ago. It was amazing to see so much music come out of so little physical real estate.

The hall remained in rapt silence as familiar layers accumulated, not with the suspense of watching a virtuoso pull off a difficult trick, but with the satisfaction of watching him revisit the craft that shaped his career.

It was a victory lap without bravado, one that acknowledged where Bird started while demonstrating how little he now needed to prove.

    <a href="https://riffmedia.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/01233953/janehu-5365.jpg"
