Long Beach plans to install 18 speed cameras across the city in an effort to catch speeding drivers and issue citations by mail.<\/p>\n
The automated cameras, designed to detect drivers traveling above the speed limit on surface streets, will be installed at 18 locations, including Long Beach Boulevard and Artesia Boulevard.<\/p>\n
City officials said speeding remains a leading factor in fatal crashes. Long Beach recorded 53 traffic deaths in 2025, the highest number since the 1990s.<\/p>\n
Sylvia Adams, a Long Beach resident who uses a wheelchair, said she has been struck by drivers three times.<\/p>\n
“They just turn. I have the light, and I have the right of way. And they just make the turn anyway without even looking,” Adams said. “It’s dangerous for pedestrians. Even when I’m in my wheelchair, it’s dangerous for us.”<\/p>\n
Speed feedback signs will also be installed at the 18 camera locations. When a driver is detected traveling 11 mph or more above the posted speed limit, the system will photograph the vehicle’s rear license plate. After trained employees review the data, the city will issue a citation.<\/p>\n
Fines will increase based on how far a driver exceeds the speed limit:<\/p>\n
11 to 15 mph over: $50<\/p>\n
16 to 25 mph over: $100<\/p>\n
26 mph or more over: $200<\/p>\n
100 mph or more: $500<\/p>\n
Drivers will not begin receiving citations immediately. The city said the required 60-day warning period will begin no later than Oct. 4. Citations will be issued beginning no later than Dec. 3.<\/p>\n
The violations will not appear on a driver’s record or be reported to insurance companies, according to the city.<\/p>\n
