\n The New York office of OMA<\/a>, led by partner Jason Long, together with San Francisco\u2013based Y.A. Studio, has completed 730 Stanyan, a new affordable housing development in San Francisco’<\/a>s famous Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Located at the intersection of Haight and Stanyan Streets, at the entrance to Golden Gate Park, the 194,000-square-foot building transforms a former fast-food site into housing and community space.\n<\/p>\n

\n The building, which was developed by the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) and Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC), is organized to meet the scale of the historic buildings that surround it. An eight-story volume sits between two four-story sections that flank Haight and Waller, neighborhood streets to the north and south. The taller volume is shaped to create a series of courtyards and terraces that weave outdoor space, light, and the nearby park into the mixed-use building, which provides 160 deeply affordable units and neighborhood-serving amenities for low-income and formerly unhoused families, and transitional age youth. Fifty percent of the apartments contain two or three bedrooms.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cPartnering with OMA, TNDC, and CCDC on 730 Stanyan meant bringing real technical rigor to the project vision: durable materials, courtyards that actually get used, homes built for the long term,\u201d says Yakuh Askew, principal at Y.A. Studio. \u201cBut none of that matters if we lose sight of who they’re for \u2014 families staying together, young people starting out on their own, neighbors rebuilding their lives.\u201d\u00a0 On the exterior of the building, a series of modular glass fiber reinforced concrete \u201cwave\u201d panels are shaped to playfully echo the rhythm and form of the neighborhood\u2019s townhouses. Three separate courtyards, designed in collaboration with GLS Landscape Architecture, organize the ground floor: a private internal garden, a childcare play area, and a gathering court open toward the park. \u201cBy carving 730 Stanyan to maximize light, views, and shared outdoor spaces, we sought to create homes that are generous and deeply connected to the surrounding community and Golden Gate Park,\u201d said Long in a statement.\n<\/p>\n

\n Residents began moving in several months ago, and the building\u2014which represents OMA’s first completed 100 percent affordable housing project in the United States\u2014is now fully occupied.\n<\/p>\n
