OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A local Sheriff is putting out a stern warning about the potential dangers of electric motorcycles following a serious crash.<\/p>\n
The Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office says that a 12-year-old was injured in a crash shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n
The child , Rochester Hills crashed in the area of Dorfield Drive and Briston Drive.<\/p>\n
911 callers reported that the child was unconscious following the collision, according to law enforcement.<\/p>\n
Investigators say the 12-year-old was operating an electric motorcycle when the child struck a 2010 Ram 1500 that was legally parked along the roadway.<\/p>\n
The OCSO released these details:<\/p>\n
Personnel from the Rochester Hills Fire Department responded and transported the child to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, where the child was admitted in serious but stable condition.Investigators determined the electric motorcycle involved in the crash is advertised as capable of speeds exceeding 45 mph. The motorcycle was not registered or insured. The child was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash; however, the helmet was designed for bicycle use and was not a motorcycle-rated helmet.The Sheriff\u2019s Office is reminding parents and riders that many increasingly popular electric motorcycles are significantly different from traditional electric bicycles. Depending on their design, power and maximum speed, these vehicles may be considered motorcycles or other motor vehicles under Michigan law and can be subject to licensing, registration, insurance and equipment requirements.<\/p>\n
The Sheriff is also warning parents about the laws involving these vehicles:<\/p>\n
\u201cThese high-powered electric motorcycles are capable of reaching speeds that can cause catastrophic injuries in a matter of seconds, and they should never be treated as toys,\u201d Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard said. \u201cParents need to understand exactly what they are purchasing for their children, and riders need to know and follow the law. That includes understanding where these vehicles can legally be operated, what licensing and registration requirements apply, and using safety equipment specifically designed for the type of vehicle being ridden. A bicycle helmet is not designed to provide the same level of protection as a properly rated motorcycle helmet.
