1.\u00a0LA28 launches volunteer program for 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0LA28, the organizing committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Thursday launched a volunteer program for interested residents to help prepare the region ahead of the international event.<\/p>\n

Officially called the LA28 Volunteer Program presented by Delta Air Lines, the initiative seeks to engage residents in the Greater Los Angeles area to get involved in volunteer opportunities as soon as this year.<\/p>\n

Details related to volunteer positions during the 2028 Games are expected to be shared in 2026.<\/p>\n

“We are not waiting until 2028 to tap into Los Angeles’ resilience, generosity and grit. This unique initiative channels the spirit of volunteerism long before the Opening Ceremony, and we have the chance to create a model for future Host Cities, as well as a legacy for Los Angeles and the Games,” LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said in a statement.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Bonta talks Proposition 50 victory, taking on the Trump administration in wide ranging interview<\/a><\/p>\n

Democrats in California are riding high after voters overwhelmingly accepted Proposition 50 on Tuesday, the ballot measure that will create five new Democratic-leaning districts in an attempt to box out Republicans and help flip the House in 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Voters] were very clear about the fact that they rejected Trump’s lawlessness and his efforts that have made groceries and other costs higher, and they want people who are hungry to have food and people who are sick to have affordable health care,\u201d California Attorney General Rob Bonta said. \u201cThey don’t want militarized American cities and don’t want masked ICE agents foaming around in communities and neighborhoods. And also don’t want tariffs making costs higher.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging interview Wednesday evening, Bonta spoke with Spectrum News about the president\u2019s tariff policy that is now before the Supreme Court, his victories against the Trump administration, and briefly touched on the lawsuit the California Republican party filed Wednesday against Proposition 50.<\/p>\n

Bonta \u2014 who is not named in the suit \u2014 is likely to represent Gov. Gavin Newsom and Secretary of State Shirley Webber in the case, so the comments he made about the filing were limited. But he told Spectrum News he believes the people\u2019s will should be honored.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0LeBron James ready for contact basketball activity as he works toward season debut for Lakers<\/a><\/p>\n

LeBron James is ready for contact basketball activity, and he will be re-evaluated by the Los Angeles Lakers’ team physician in one to two weeks as he prepares to begin his unprecedented 23rd NBA season.<\/p>\n

James has yet to play this season or practice with the Lakers after being\u00a0shut down early in training camp due to sciatica, a lower-body nerve problem. The next step in his recovery is five-on-five basketball work in practice, but it’s unclear when that could begin because the Lakers are headed out on a five-game road trip beginning Saturday in Atlanta, and James isn’t expected to travel with the team.<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old James has been working out individually in recent weeks. The Lakers announced James’ progression to contact basketball on Thursday, exactly four weeks after the team initially said the top scorer in NBA history would be re-evaluated in three to four weeks.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Man threatening to kill Democrat Rep. Garcia arrested; has history of threats<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0A Pennsylvania man is facing possible charges Thursday after allegedly threatening a local U.S. congressman with death, and was arrested trying to enter a federal building.<\/p>\n

The threats were aimed at Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Long Beach, by 43-year-old Richard Griffin, who U.S. Capitol police say has “a history of emailing a Congressional office, as well as various government officials and law enforcement agencies.”<\/p>\n

A statement issued by Garcia’s office on Tuesday said the suspect allegedly sent a message to his congressional office, “stating that he was going to travel to Washington, D.C. to kill him.”<\/p>\n

Griffin was spotted by a USCP Rapid Response Team around 12:30 p.m. that day \u2014 Election Day \u2014 and “was stopped before he could attempt to go through security screening at the Delaware Avenue Door of the Russell Senate Office Building,” according to a news release.<\/p>\n
