A devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, killing at least 80 people and causing widespread destruction as emergency teams race to reach those affected.
\nThe earthquake struck at approximately 7:34 a.m. local time on August 10 near San Jos\u00e9 del Palmar in Colombia\u2019s Choc\u00f3 Department. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the powerful earthquake originated deep beneath the region, at approximately 107 kilometers (66 miles).
\nThe impact was felt across Colombia, with some of the most serious destruction reported in the western part of the country. Buildings have collapsed in several communities, leaving people trapped and prompting urgent rescue efforts.
\nRisaralda has reported the highest number of fatalities so far, with dozens of lives lost. Cali has also suffered extensive damage, with at least 30 buildings reported to have collapsed as rescue crews work to locate those still missing.
\nIn Choc\u00f3, the department closest to the earthquake\u2019s epicenter, officials have reported deaths, injuries, and extensive structural damage in Quibd\u00f3. Residents have also been warned to remain cautious as aftershocks continue.
\nColombia has declared a state of emergency as authorities coordinate the response to the disaster. Flights at several regional airports have also been suspended while facilities are inspected for possible structural damage.
\nThe full extent of the tragedy is still being assessed, with the number of lives lost and people injured expected to change as rescue efforts continue and more information emerges from impacted communities.
