Josh \u2060Kushner and Bob Iger \u2060are purchasing \u2060the \u200bLos Angeles Lakers for more \u2060than $12.5bn in a record-breaking \u2060deal, ESPN reported \u200bon \u200cWednesday<\/a>, citing \u200csources with knowledge \u200cof the deal.<\/p>\n

Billionaire Mark Walter purchased a majority stake of the \u200cNBA team last year<\/a> from the Buss family in a \u200bdeal that valued the club at $10bn, with \u2060the deal only \u200bhaving \u200bbeen approved \u200bby the board \u200bof \u200cgovernors \u200bin \u200bOctober.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss,\u201d Kushner and Iger said in a statement. \u201cOur long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Any deal to buy the Lakers would need to be approved by the NBA\u2019s board of governors, whose next meeting is due to take place in September.<\/p>\n

Walter thanked the Buss family as well as the team\u2019s fans in a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOwning the Los Angeles<\/a> Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life \u2013 an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family. I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Walter is the CEO of holding company TWG Global, which also has interests in MLB\u2019s Los Angeles Dodgers, the WNBA\u2019s Los Angeles Sparks, Premier League club Chelsea and the Professional Women\u2019s Hockey League. Walter is currently under federal investigation<\/a> over allegations of tax fraud. Walter denies any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump. Iger is the former CEO of Disney.<\/p>\n

The Lakers are one of the most storied teams in North American sports. Their 17 NBA titles trail only the Boston Celtics. Their last championship came in 2020, and although they recently parted ways with LeBron James they are still one of the biggest draws in US sports<\/a> and are led by Slovenian superstar Luka Don\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n

The $12.5bn price tag is not only record-setting for US sports but it continues a trend of NBA franchise values rocketing.
